The late Sean Niland The death occurred of Sean (Sam) Niland, Tulira, Ardrahan. He was aged 86 and died after a short illness in University College Hospital, Galway. Sam, as he was affectionately known to everyone, was a true traditionalist who always upheld the customs of yesteryear. He took a great interest in local history and heritage and could recall many events and happenings in the Ardrahan area throughout most of the last century. Sean had a lifelong interest in hurling and played the game in the early 1950s, winning a South Galway Intermediate medal with Ardrahan in 1952. He gave many years of voluntary service as a gateman at games in Ardrahan during the several decades of the existence of the South Galway Divisional Board. Sean worked for local farmers in his early years and went on to work with the roads maintenance section of Galway County Council until his retirement in the mid 1980s. He worked part-time at Quinn's General Stores for some years and was a regular and familiar figure there over the years. He loved the conversation and banter and was a popular figure who will be missed. A pleasant and caring man, he had a cheerful, outgoing personality and was respected by all who came in contact with him. Very Rev Fr. Richie Higgins, P.P., was Chief Celebrant at the funeral Mass at St Teresa's Church, Ardrahan, assisted by Very Rev. Canon Joseph Keogh, retired P.P. Peter Skerrit (nephew) and Pat Quinn did the readings at the Mass and the coffin was draped in the Ardrahan GAA Club colours and burial took place in the local cemetery. He is survived by his sisters Tessie, Bridie and Rose (England) and his brother Martin. Courtesy of the Connacht Tribune 05 January 2007
