McLellan, Joe

November 09, 2006
The late Joe McLellan Grange GAA Club members were shocked when the news broke of the sudden death of Joe McLellan of Gurrane. Joe was well known and well liked by everyone who knew him. Joe was a great follower of all sports. A great supporter of Grange GAA Club and a great man to sell tickets for the Easter Draw. This PRO was asked after the funeral did Joe ever play for Grange. Yes he did. In 1974 when we played Kilshannig in a league game in Doneraile. Grange were short one to make fifteen. Joe answered the call and put on the jersey to save us giving Kilshannig the game. Joe played in the forward line. Marking Joe that day was big Donie O'Sullivan. Joe was a great Arsenal supporter. He was also very involved in coursing especially with the Grange/Fermoy Coursing Club. He trained his own dog to win a big race. He never forgot where he came from. he named the dog Grange Lemon. Only a few nights before a sudden death Joe went to the Cork Track with The Long Bar for a night out. Joe would be a great man to go racing with, be it point to point or a race meeting in Mallow with his brother in law James O'Sullivan. A great man for the cards in The Long Bar. Joe was also a great dart's player, playing with teams around the town. Joe was employed for most of his working life in Fitzgerald Bros. Victuallers Shop in Pearse Square and he was well known to all who called to the shop. The large crowd that turned up to the removal and funeral Mass was testament to Joe's popularity. May he rest in peace. Joe was the son of Sean and Margaret McLellan. He will be sadly missed by his father, sisters Bridie, Martha and Margaret. His brothers Tom, Frank, William and John. Brothers and sisters in law, relatives, nephew, nieces and a very large circle of his friends. Grange GAA Club formed a guard of honour on the night of his removal.
