Kelly, James P

The late James P. Kelly With the passing of Mr James P. Kelly of Drumavoughane, Maigh Cuilinn, the local community lost another well-known and respected parishioner. He was in his early 90s, and he had a very active life, being involved in many community activities and was especially associated with GAA and with the Fianna Fail organisations. He was recognised as a good footballer in his younger days, and was a regular supporter of local teams in venues across the county and beyond. Mr. Kelly also experienced the great excitement of seeing his only son, the late Padraic 'Dandy' Kelly, deliver top performances for the club and county teams. Of course, the sudden and untimely loss of his son Padraic and later the loss of his youngest grandson Darragh, were major blows; but he continued on in the true spirit and resilience of the man. As a member of the local farming community, he had a very close affinity with nature and the environment - and of the Irish language - as well as a great fondness for the simple but very important things in life. He was always a hard-working, sincere and devoted family man. Mr Kelly was a fine conversationalist, and enjoyed meeting people. It was sad that one of his great friends, Dr. Eamonn Scully of Ballyquirke, passed away on the previous day. The loss of those two great parishioners will be greatly mourned and fondly remembered within immediate family circles and in the wider community. On a sad week in the Parish, with a number of deaths, large numbers of deaths, large numbers congregated for the removal of his remains, and the burial ceremonies. His removal was from Aiseiri Funeral Home to the nearby Church of the Immaculate Conception. The burial ceremonies took place at the local cemetery following Requiem Mass. Tributes were extended to the deceased and his family, while many joined in the Guards of Honour. James P Kelly is survived by his wife, Mary B. (nee Faherty of Drimaveg); by his daughters, Philomena, Mona, Brid, Mairead and Martina; sister, sons-in-law; daughter-in-law; grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and a wide circle of friends and neighbours.
