The late Michael Mitchell The death occurred of Mr Michael Mitchell, Menlough, Ballinasloe at the Mater Hospital, Dublin after a short illness. Michael (73), or Mickie as he was affectionately known, was Principal of Menlough National School from 1959 to 1994. Having previously worked as a teacher in Athenry for a short period. He was throughout his life a great community leader and served as Secretary to Menlough GAA Club, Menlough Hall Committee, and served as an officer and member of many other organisations, such as the County Ploughing Association, Community Games, IRA Monument Committee, The Tidy Towns, Pastoral Council, Coiste Iomana na Gaillimhe, The Our Lady's Grotto Committee and many others. Mickie was also a lover of local history and traced the ancestral home of many people as well as being the writer of a Parish History for the Diocese and his last work the History of Menlough National School. In more recent times, and especially since his retirement, he displayed his work as a sculptor and wood turner, mainly working with bog oak. His remains reposed at St Mary's Funeral Home, Menlough, before being removed to the local Church and the burial took place at the new Cemetery after Concelebrate Requiem Mass. The concelebrants included his brother, Fr Jimmy Mitchell (Cross and African Missionary); Very Rev Fr Sean Kilbane, PP Menlough; Rev Fr Michael Screene, Galway; Rev Fr Authur Devine, Castlebar; Very Rev Fr James Ronayne, PP, Clifden; Very Rev Fr M Kelly, Provincial Supervisor of the MSC Order; Very Rev Fr Paddy Naughton, PP Woodford; Very Rev Fr Nicholas Murray; PP Kilconnell and many other priests who joined as concelebrants.
