The late Michael Tarpey It was with deep sadness that the people of the area learned of the death of Michael Tarpey formerly of Island, Turloughmore. A native of Corofin parish Michael was an outstanding footballer and played for Corofin for many years. Mick was one of the star defenders who helped Corofin reach the Galway Senior Football Championship final on 1964 only to lose to a great Mountbellew team captained by the late Enda Colleran. Mick Tarpey captured an All-Ireland Junior medal in 1965 and was later to join Galway senior panel where he played an active role for several years. Mick took great pride in his family and it was with delight that he watched his son Michael win an All-Ireland Minor medal with Galway in 1986. Mick Tarpey lived in Turloughmore for several years and was hugely popular in the area. He was a founding member of Claregalway Ladies Football Club and was strongly involved with Turloughmore Camogie club at under age level. An excellent golfer who played with local societies, Mick had severed as President and Captain of Loughgeorge Golf Society and was a member of Turloughmore Golf Society. Mick had overcome a serious heart operation several years ago and had lived life to the full since his recovery. Mick and Patricia moved to Athenry in recent years and his unexpected passing in Athenry at the weekend came as a great shock to his family and friends.
