O'Shea, Mick

The Late Mick O'Shea With the passing of Mick O'Shea, Tuam lost one of its most familiar and popular faces. Mick was a native of Cork - in his youth he was an outstanding footballer and hurler, winning an All-Ireland Junior medal in 1952. Many people including Eamon Young felt he was very unlucky not to have been selected on the Cork Senior All-Ireland winners of 1945. Mick also excelled in the game of Bowls which was then and still is a very popular sport in Cork. He never lost his love of all sports. Mick gave his working life to the Irish Sugar Company, staring off in Mallow and coming to Tuam in 1961, settling down in Airglooney with his wife and family. He was an excellent fitter and any breakdowns in machinery in the factory were quickly and efficiently repaired. As head of the engineering workshop in the factory he imparted his own unique skills to many grateful apprentices. Mick took a great interest in the Sports and Social Club of the factory and in particular preparing the factory team for the inter factory leagues. In his capacity as Superintendent Engineer he was a firm favourite and enjoyed the confidence, trust and respect of management and workers alike. Mick was a great family man. When his wife Margaret fell ill some years ago he continued to care for her with devotion until his own health failed him. For a number of years he fought ill-health with the same courage and determination he had shown on the playing fields of his youth. In the manner of his going, he was an inspiration to us all. He will be sadly missed by his wife and family, son Michael, daughters Helen and Mary Rose, daughter-in-law Fionnuala and much adored grandchildren who were so good to him in his final days. Mick will also be sincerely missed by a great number of friends who will fondly remember him as the gentleman he surely was. Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a Anam Dhílis.
