January 17, 2013
The death occurred peacefully last week after a long illness of Mr. Michael Higgins Lurgan Caltra and formerly of Caltra Park, Caltra at U.C.H.G hospital Galway. Michael (86) or Mick as he was affectionately known was throughout his life a hard working and respected farmer.

In his youth he was a talented Gaelic Footbailer and played with his native Caltra. He had worked in his youth at the Gowla Farm for a number of years. His remains reposed at the Franciscan Oratory Chapel, Mountbellew before being removed to Our lady of Lourdes Church Caltra and after the celebration of mass of the resurrection the burial took place to the adjoining cemetery. Officers and members of Caltra G.A.A. club formed a guard of honour on the evening of the removal. The Chief Celebrant at the mass the Very Rev. Fr Christy Mc Cormack P.P. Fohenagh in the
homily of the mass spoke of his interest in sport, his love of reading and his annual visit on his bicycle to Knock for many years. Family Members were involved in the readings, prayers of the
faithful and offertory procession while the music and singing of the church choir and three of his nieces enhanced the ceremony. His Brother John in a communion reflection spoke of his love of sport, his example and leadership as one of the elder members of the family and thanked his wife Theresa for the care she afforded him and all others who looked after him during his illness and all who visited him.
