Fergal Moore has been appointed captain of the Galway hurlers for 2012.

The long-serving defender from Turloughmore will lead the Tribesmen for the first time when they take on Dublin in the first round of the Allianz Hurling League at Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Galway will be without star forward Joe Canning for the visit of the league champions after he damaged the AC joint in his shoulder while playing for Limerick IT in the Fitzgibbon Cup yesterday.

Moore, who battled back from a career-threatening ankle injury last year, won All-Ireland minor medals in 1999 and 2000 and a National League medal in 2004. Tweet
