Ballygar Hurling club notes

June 20, 2011
Ballygar 1-20 Craughwell 2-13.
Our Junior A team got their championship campaign back on track on Sunday with a hard fought victory over Craughwell played in Athenry. After a disappointing first round defeat by Sylane the team rebounded well and are now right back in contention for qualification from our group. Ballygar playing with the wind in first half were slow to settle as the teams traded scores over the first five minutes. Then a goal from a long range free by DJ Nolan gave Ballygar a slight edge with ten minutes played. It was score for score from here until half time, Ballygar going in leading 1-8 to 0-9. A two point lead seamed hardly sufficient heading in to the second half as the wind picked up.
Craughwell were first off the mark with a controversial goal as they took the lead for the first time in the game. It was now Ballygar really started to play driven on by the excellent Dara O Malley at centre half back. Eric Walsh, Stepen Lohan and Decaln Nolan all took excellent scores as Ballygar pulled ahead by 5 points a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. The work rate by the forward line in the second half was a dramatically increased from the first half as Ballygar showed the greater desire for the victory. Pat Quinn rolled back the years to give a flawless second half performance. Dara O Malley dominated his position as did debutant Paul Mahony at full back. Eric Walsh displayed great industry in the middle of the field. Stepen Lohan was the pick of the attack scoring several points from frees and play. David Quinn made a telling contribution after his introduction at half time. Overall it was a good display and gives the lads plenty to work on as head into a short break until the next round on the 9th of July. Well done to all concerned.
Our Junior C team were narrowly defeated by Moycullen in Moycullen last Tuesday in the first round of the champinship played in terrible weather conditions. It was a credit to all who made the long journey to Moycullen for this fixture on a Tuesday evening. Best of luck in the next round which is fixed for this comming weekend.
