Craughwell Camogie Club World Record attempt
June 08, 2011
Craughwell Camogie Club will bid to enter the Guinness World Records when 30 of the clubs Junior players will attempt a 24 hour 'Solothon' on Saturday and Sunday June 18-19th.
The World Record bid is being spearheaded by Erin Dolan who notes that the venture will focus on hurley and sliothar control over the greatest distance by a camogie team in a 24-hour period.
"We have 30 players over (the age of) 16 who are basically going to solo for 24 hours solid" states Erin. "The record we have to beat is 50km (31.07 miles) which we are hoping to do with ease."
Erin says that as far as she knows, no camogie or hurling club from Ireland hold a record in the Guinness World Records, although there are records held by a gaelic club in relation to the largest training session and by a camogie club in London.
Erin continues: " We are also taking this opportunity not only to raise much needed funds for Craughwell Camogie Club but also to raise funds for Breast Cancer Ireland. Lots of players on our team have had first hand experience of dealing with this terrible illness and we want to use this project to highlight this awareness".
She says that Craughwell will be inviting other clubs and players in Galway - and anyone else - to come along and offer moral support by soloing with them. Indeed, Camogie President Joan O' Flynn has accepted an invitation to attend the world record attempt, which will begin at midday on Saturday, June 18th and run right throughout the day and night until midday Sunday, June 19th.
