Paddy Langan

The recent death of Paddy Langan brought another unwanted gathering of the hurlers from Turloughmore who had created history almost half a century earlier when they captured an amazing six in a row of Galway Senior Hurling Championship titles. Paddy Langan played a major role in that historic success and although he suffered poor health in recent years, he always made the extra effort to join his comrades at any club reunion. It was fitting then that they would assemble in huge numbers to pay their respects back to a man who was always so proud of his native black and white. Paddy Langan was born of Ballinvoher and brought in difficult times as the oldest in a large family. Hard work was the order of the day in his youth and like many of his comrades he was quickly off to work and at an early age and he had a huge interest in machinery. In later years Paddy had established a well known business of his own working on machinery.

Paddy was a strong, uncompromising character and on the Turloughmore hurling fields he quickly established a place that would make him one of the best corner backs in the county. Paddy played corner back for Turloughmore in the great six in a row era (1961 - 1966, where he was tough and tenacious, with a huge clearance. Paddy also played for Galway on many occasions.

In recent years, Paddy Langan was honoured and humbled by Turloughmore club when he was named President. Paddy had lived in mervue for most of his life and in recent years, during his ill health, tremendous care was given to Paddy by his devoted wife Mary and his family.

The remains of Paddy Langan were taken from the Holy Family Funeral Home, Mervue, to the Holy Family Church, Mervue, and following requiem mass, Paddy was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, bothersome. His colleagues in Turloughmore hurling club escorted his remains to the church and the cemetery on both days as a fitting tribute to a colleague and friend. Paddy Langan is survived by his wife Mary, sons, Joe, Donie, Ray and Padraic, brothers Danny, Christy, Michael John, Brendan and Francis, sisters, Bridie, Nuala and Ann, daughters in law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces relatives and a large circle of friends.
