The death occurred peacefully of Paddy Ryan, Waterloo, Menlough at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.
Paddy was born in 1926 and his life revolved around his home area. He was a hard working and respected man. His early working life was in construction and later farming.
He was always active and committed to community life. Paddy was hugely involved with the local group water scheme, Menlough GAA and school committees during his lifetime.
He was passionate about sport throughout his life. Paddy had a distinguishing athletics career with Laught Athletics Club in the 1950s. He played for Menlough GAA in the 1940s and 1950s. As time went on he continued to get pleasure from watching his grandchildren play on various teams.
Paddy had many illnesses but remained positive and good humoured throughout which gave him the chance to live a very full life. He greatly appreciated what medicine did for him and with this in mind he kindly donated his body to medical research.
His remains reposed at the Franciscan Monastery. Afterwards Menlough GAA club paid a fitting tribute by forming a guard of honour and a candle lit procession taking him to his Waterloo home for the last night.
Requiem Mass was concelebrated at St Mary's Church, Menlough by Rev Fr J O'Gorman PP Menlough, Rev Fr P Costelloe, Mountbellew, Rev Fr M Screene, Skehana, Rev Fr S Mellett, CSsR, Dublin, Rev Fr P Mooney PP Glenamaddy, Rev Fr L Cuffe, St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin.
In the homily Fr O'Gorman spoke of Paddy's devotion to his much loved wife and family, his respect for the blessed sacrament, love of animals, passion for the G.A.A and wealth of local knowledge.
He is survived by his devoted wife Patsy, sons Joe, Michael, Colum, Padraic, daughters Maura, Breege, Una and Nollaig, sister, Sr Columba, brother Mick, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
