The Community of Ballymacward and Gurteen were deeply saddened by the untimely passing of John Kilkenny of Kinreask on Saturday August 1.
John entered the ESB in 1952 and began working on the Rural Electrification Scheme.
After the completion of the Rural Electrification Scheme John continued his career with the ESB in Tuam Station.
He spent over 44 years with the ESB and, through his work; John played a key role in transforming rural life in the home and on the farm.
John was born and reared on his farm in Kinreask and he was indeed a man who was always at one with the land.
He played hurling with Ballymacward Hurling Club for many years and was a founding member of Padraig Pearses GAA club, serving as the first treasurer of the club for many years.
John was the son of the late Martin Kilkenny and Marie Scanlon of Menlough. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Loughname of Loughrea and his daughter Claire.
He will be sorely missed by his children Ann-Marie, Shane and Geraldine, his brother Tom (Dunboyne), his sister Bridie (Birmingham), and his wide circle of relations and friends.
