Rock, Willie

News of the death of Willie Rock (87) following a traffic accident at the Square, Gort, caused a great shock all over South Galway and there were many expressions of sympathy to his wife Mary (nee Tannian of Kilbeacanty) and their ten children. The accident happened at 3p.m. as he was entering the main road having descended the steps at the square. Anarticulated lorry was involved in the accident and he died at the scene. The accident caused the traffic through the town in both directions to stop and there was a tail back of traffic as far as Lissatunna in one direction and as far as Prospect in the other. The body of the deceased was removed to University College. Willie Rock was a farmer who was held in high esteem in the community his particular interest was horses and he had considerable expertise in judging horses and kept brood mares. He was uncle of the former great Gort hurler, Colie Rock and was grandfather of former County Galway hurler Peter Huban of Kinvara. He is survived by his wife Mary; by his daughters Pauline, Mary Anne, Brigid, Martha and Michelle; by his sons Pat, William, John and Peter; by his daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren other relatives and a large circle of friends.
