Kerins, Patsy

September 19, 2001
Patsy Kerins (46), Chairman of Gort GAA Club, and manager and former Chairman of Gort Co-Operative Livestock Mart, who died last Friday after an illness bravely borne, had worked tirelessly for the good of the community and the huge turn-out at his funeral on Sunday and Monday was evidence of the affection and respect so many people had for him. Patsy was a gentle giant of a man, a friendly father figure in his own family, in Gort and Galway GAA hurling and in the Gort Mart and farming circles. He was an extensive farmer at his home in Ballinastaigue. He contributed in large measure to the development of Gort GAA Club and the new pitches at Ballybaun. For many years he worked as Gort delegate on the county GAA Hurling Board. As committee chairman and manager of Gort Co-Op Livestock Mart, he gave effective leadership in the development of the new mart premises. Patsy was mourned by all who knew him and they expressed sincere sympathy to his widow Marian (nee Fahy of Monksfield); brothers, Desmond (USA) and Martin; sisters, Kathleen, Mary, Anne, Geraldine and Pauline; uncle, Austin O'Connor (USA) and other relatives. Very Rev. Canon Michael Kelly P.P. Gort, officiated at the removal of the remains from O'Sullivan's Funeral Home to St. Coleman's Church Gort on Sunday evening and at the concelebrated requiem mass and burial at Kilmacduagh cemetery. Pierce Piggott, the former Galway hurling star and current manager of Gort hurling team, paid tribute to Patsy Kerins at St. Colman's Church, Gort. He described the dedication, leadership and achievements of this unassuming man.
