Galway GAA is mourning the death of former county hurling star Marty Barrett after a short illness. Aged 56, Barrett was a central figure in Galway's emergence as a hurling force in the 1970s which culminated in Liam McCarthy wins in 1980, '87 and '88. He was corner forward on the team that won the 1972 All-Ireland under 21 title and was also part of the 1975 National League winning side. A member of the Padraig Pearses club in east Galway, he moved to Wexford in the late 1970s where he took up a teaching post in St. Peter's College. Frank Burke, who was a team-mate of Barrett's, recalled how he battled with a broken thumb to play in the 1975 All-Ireland final against Kilkenny. "He trained with a cast on his hand from the time we beat Cork in the semi-final to the week of the final against Kilkenny. He managed to line out against Kilkenny in the final, which showed the resolve he had." Tweet
