It's just a first stab at making things better

Give the 'Super Eight' a chance - that's the message from Tomas O Se.

"We spend decades advocating the need for change then, when change comes, we jump straight down the throats of those behind it.

"Last weekend's decision is just a start, that's all. Nobody's being disregarded here. Nobody's being written out of anything. It's just a first stab at making things better. Give it a chance."

O'Sé is right. It's the first step for an organisation that moves slowly. People will have to give it a chance and then work towards making it better an more inclusive.

Yep totally agree with everything O'Shea says. Couldn't have said it better myself!

He's 100% right.Padraic Duffy knows if anything more drastic is proposed it would be rejected so we have to go slowly towards a proper solution and Super 8 is the first step along the road.

Completely disagree. He is doing nothing but towing the party line with that statement. His statements are illogical. How can it be the first step in making things better if, in fact, it is making things worse? I have not heard one person complaining about the All-Ireland quarter finals. I have heard loads of complaints about the provincial championships. Therefore, the first step in making things better would be to fix the part that is broken. Instead, they go an tamper the part that is about the best part of the whole championship (the knockout part).

Of course, Tomas is entitled to his opinion like everybody else. He, of course, disagrees with the vast majority of all club and county players who don't like this proposal. This vote was sham democracy. It was back-alley gombeenism. It was a slap in the face to the vast majority of players in the country. It highlights the vast chasm that exists between the GAA bureaucracy and the players.

Tomas O Se response: stop complaining and just accept. Sorry, we must complain. We must complain loudly and this is not going to be accepted without a fight from payers and clubs members. Players should not give this a chance. This proposal doesn't deserve a chance. The vast majority are against it. The suits should recognize it change it. That would take real leadership though.

Step 1: Super 8 as voted through congress.
Step 2: Expanding to 16. 8 provincial finalists and 8 Qualifier Round 2 winners.

I don't think O'Shea's response is to say "Stop complaining". He's saying to the GPA " Get your act together...you had plenty of time to make your views known and you could have shaped the debate if you were serious about it". And he's saying to the CPA... "Your time will come...you have just been formed and for that reason were too late on the scene to influence the debate but in a year or two when you are better organised you will have the clout and influence to ensure that your views will have to be taken seriously".

"It's the first step for an organisation that moves slowly."

It'd want to start moving faster.

The GAA have decent crowds. Any changes will have to come in phases over time. If the Super 8 proves successful it can be expanded to 16 with a similar format in hurling. If the Super 8 is a flop, the quarter-finals will most likely be restored.
