God be with the days when the National Huring League would commence with scores like Cork 1-12 Wexford 3-07 and Clare 0-15 Offaly 1-09...they are only made up scores by the way in case the people of Cork and Offaly (where I am from take offence!)...since the early 2000's the whole thing has gone pearshaped with apparent near mechanical like forward play...I remember Galway beating Offaly back in the mid 1990's scoring 0-28 and it was unheard of total at the time..I recall Cork beating Waterford by something like 5-31 to 3-06 or something in or around 1982/3 Munster final..but those were exceptions at that time..Now the League kicks off with scores like Dublin 0-26 Cork 0-22 (sorry again Cork) and Waterford 1-25 Galway 0-26 or other...changes are nearly wholesale so every player that comes on has a hard act to follow and will add to such high scores I have copied and pasted in the 182-83 semi finals and final results below..ok Kilkenny got 5 goals but didnt get 25 points along with it..Laois's 1-17 wold have been a typical "high score" for back then and would have won many a match...I wont bother putting up recent semi-finals nor finals (some of which were good games as the points tallies would be so high...

You might be right. I haven't the time to check all the stats, but randomly picking the Hurling All-Ireland Championships of 50 and 60 years ago; they show that although there was plenty of goals, no team in 1957 scored more ten 12 points in a match, with 16 points (once) being the highest in 1967.
There are reasons for the increase in points scored in matches. Back then, the game was played more on the floor. The pitches would not have been as good as todays, making it harder to raise the ball, especially when under pressure from an opposing player. Also, the ball used to today travels further then the ones used 50 odd years ago.
Replying To Fairplayalways: "yeah the ball on the ground more back years ago would be the reason for less points..the scoring now though is rediculously high...I think anyway..."
Sure that's obvious to anyone who watches the game.
