National - Bitter rivalries

I'd be a hurling man - but the Kerry football games are the only ones I ever attend - with the exception of the second half of a Kildare football game that was on before the hurlers played KK in Croke Park a f years back.

For me (and I reckon a lot of other hurling people) beating Kerry is the main thing in football. The AI is nice - the football crowd certainly enjoy it - but beating Kerry seems to count for more.

Personally for me its Derry and Tyrone. Both massive rivals before they days they ever won anything. Look at last years Mckenna cup final if you need and proof. It was fought like a championship game in front of 7-8k

Also I think this should be splint in 2.

A. Classic/traditional rivals Cork and Kerry

B. Modern day rivals like say Dublin and Tyrone (prob a bad example)

( don't read too much into the examples of get offended they just popped up )

The biggest two rivals in the country are club and county!!

Going off on a tangent here but it's the insurance. Someone successfully sued the Dublin City Council for tripping over on a board walk in the Dublin Mountains. The plaintiff was an experienced mountain climber who had hiked in the Himalayas.

Wexford and killkenny had great games through the the 50 60 70 80's and into the 90's.
Fabulous hurling games in early 70's and 92/ 93.
Wexford would of won a lot more all-irelands only for our leinster rivals???
Let's not forget the night before the battle of Ross in 1798, the killkenny boys "pissed on the powder " and fled back across the Barrow before the fighting.
Or who really brought the Norman's to Ireland, Fitzpatricks or macmurraghs ?? Killkenny the most Norman county in Ireland, pity William marshal didn't build new Ross on the other side of the Barrow!!

Carrick Swans v Carrick Davins,in the 60s and 70s the local derby was worth going to,the rivalry on the sideline equalled the game on the field.
