Keegan got Sean Cavanagh sent off in the quarter final, then in the final he did his best to get Connolly sent off and then he got a black card himself.

I would have had both players of the year ranked 3rd and I would have gone with Padraic Maher and Ciaran Kilkenny.

I think Callanan and Fenton were the two favourites so I can't make much sense out of Gleeson and Keegan getting the nods.

These awards never fail for shock and surprise. Gleeson was subbed off against Tipp when the likes of Padraic Maher were dominating the half back line. Gleeson wins an all star in the half forward line, which he fully deserved. It's very strange, Padraic Maher got the better of all 5 opponents he faced. Backs don't get the same credit in hurling as forwards do.

I feel sorry for Callanan, missing out three years in a row is hard to take. He was probably 2nd to Hogan and Reid in 14 and 15. So he probably fancied his chances this year in a shortlist without them. The most important thing he has is a Celtic cross though.

Keegan was brilliant this year but I think Kilkenny is amazing and hugely important To Dublin.

On the plus side it is huge motivation For Callanan to shoot the lights out next year. God help the full backs he faces. These awards could be a blessing in disguise for Tipp because at least 2 or 3 players will be very disappointed not to pick up all stars.

I agree the Gleeson decision was farcical.

What a shambles decision!! So a player who gets taken off in a munster final because of hitting 6 wides gets the award over a player who scored more than the entire W'ford team in that final and who scored 0-9 from play against the cats in the AI final, and over another player who dominated the half-back line in every game he played including scoring the point of the year in the same final , while the HOTY Gleeson is in the stand probably wondering how he can get their autograph!! Laughable!!

Was expecting Keegan to be honest, it was always going to happen, huge sentiment and sympathy behind Mayo, backlash around black cards, Dublin unbeatable/win everything fatigue, the award is voted for by the players.

A very gifted footballer, but the best player in the country this year he is not. But congratulations to him.

Fenton and Kilkenny can console themselves with their Celtic Crosses.

Selected by the players!
Keegan won this because no one understands more than the players themselves what it takes to be the best.
You are now undoubtedly top dog Lee Keegan
Congrats Man

I just don't get this that with O'connor gets two YPOTY awards. He's a decent footballer, but nothing special. As for the Keegan decision- that's farcical.

That's funny I was sure it was Connolly waving the imaginary card in the final to get Keegan sent off.

The award is for player of the year not team of the year. Dublin are clearly the best team but it was a toss up between Fenton and Keegan as the best player both were brilliant this year.

Still think Keegan would swap his award with Fentons all Ireland medal in a heart beat.

It was as clear as daylight that Gleeson is POTY. Not even the shadow of a doubt about it. If you did'nt/couldn't see that after the year's hurling was done, then...!!!???

I don't know why so many of you are getting upset about some of these selections.
This is effectively a celebrated opinion poll that the players contribute to.
Its funny in that no one was talking about Lee Keegan as potential player of the year up until the Tyrone game but then again no one was doing it for Fenton or Austin Gleeson up until their respective quarter finals.
What the players do in the most high profile games is all that matters in these things. I think what might have worked against the Dublin selection as with the Tipp selection in hurling is that it was a 2 on 1 selection and thus may have split the vote.
I think a lot of people viewed Keegan's black card in the final as harsh too which may have influenced their decision not to mention that some players might just be fed up with Dublin winning everything and so wanted to spread the joy of winning around.
The same goes for Gleeson, he got subbed in the Munster final after a poor performance and hit some god awful wides, yet he gave heroic performances in the 2 semi finals against Kilkenny. It's the later games that swayed the vote for him along with any personal opinion the voting public have about the other nominations.

No one died lads, back to back All Irelands for Dublin and Tipp gave Kilkenny a spanking in the hurling final......what more do you want??

Lee keegan and Connolly best two footballers in country this year, and probably for last couple of years. Cant argue with that

Presume you are having a laugh, taken off in the Munster final, Callinan scored more than his entire team that day , and for the AI final Gleeson was in the stand looking on in awe at the Tipp performance probably wondering how he could get Maher or Callinan's autograph, its a clear anti-Tipp bias amongst rival counties that I believe will provide valuable added motivation to the All-Ireland champions next year!!!
