Slaughtneil Ulster Hurling Champions

(Oldest Posts First)

Well done lads! Been knocking on the door last couple of years...finally broke it down! A great shot in the arm for Derry & Ulster hurling.

And don't forget the valiant effort of the camogs who drew the Ulster senior final today, also against a heavily fancied Loughguile team!! Brilliant to see it all come together on the back of a week where a club stalwart, Thomas Cassidy, passed away. His daughters on the camogie team and his son on the hurling team certainly did themselves, the club, and their father's memory proud with outstanding showings! Let's hope the three girls do the business in the replay on Saturday and bring another senior Ulster title back to the club

A brilliant club which epitomises the spirit and principles for which the GAA was founded. When you have a community that pulls together, supports the endeavours of the club and 3 games of the GAA then you have a club to be proud of, then those following through want to carry on the efforts of their forbearers and want to improve as they move on. Also a great example of a club that you can completely integrate Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and ladies gaelic football, after all we are all gaelic athletic clubs not as some suggest gaelic football clubs, hurling clubs etc,
So well done Slaughtneil I know a lot of you up there and the tremendous amount of hard work which goes in to make you a successful Gaelic club, and good luck for the future games.

Well done and fully deserved. They have been unlucky over the past few years and this is just reward. Antrim club and county hurling is in terminal decline and has been for quite a while. Antrim hurlers are just bottlers, ALL talk, full of wind and unable to deliver when it matters.

This club is the polar opposite of the corporate gaa and the GPA - richly deserved and just rewards for many years of hard toil

Congrats Slaughtneil and hopefully they make it to Croke on Paddy's Day.

It will be interesting to see how they fare outside Ulster and whether or not their future opponents underestimate them, as others have pointed out, this is no fluke and they should give their next opponents a serious rattle.

As they are a young team it will also be interesting to see the response from the Antrim clubs over the next few years as there is the potential for them to be top dogs in Ulster for a few years.

Ulsterman - Pathetic comments. Wind your neck in.

Heartiest congratulations to Slaughtneil. Having 'hit the crossbar for the previous 2 years in titanic battles with Cushendall, they finally got over the line. Any amount of stick work, passion, fitness and belief. Will fear no-one going forward. Well done!

That club really does the heart good the more you hear about them. The standard bearers to which every club in Ireland should aspire to in my opinion.

The club really does do your heart good the more you hear about them. They are the standard bearers to which every club in Ireland should aspire to in my opinion. To add to what you said about them encompassing all Gaelic games and being successful you forgot the greatest thing about the club. Their commitment to Gaelic culture beyond the playing field. There is a growing and thriving Irish language community in Slaughtneil. The first rural bunscoil outside the western gaeltachts is in Slaughtneil and plans are in place for the area to be recognized as an official gaeltacht area. The club is also very active in the Scor 'scene'. Here is a piece by Brolly on the club:

On another note, it wouldn't be inconceivable for the hurlers and the footballers of Slaughtneil to make it to Croke Park on St. Patrick's Day. How would that work out does anyone have an idea?

Congratulations to the club , just goes to show what a bit of hard work plus a bit of dedication can do. Plus their use of the Irish language and hope they can enter the Gaeltacht tournament shortly. It would be great if they were the first team to win the All Ireland club Gaeltacht final from the six counties
I sincerely hope the club look into playing in the tournament but best of luck going forward

PS--- why not apply to enter the Donegal Gaeltacht championship which is played around March/April with the final in May, with the winners going on to the National finals
Anything to promote the GAA and culture/ language and I believe we already have a team from Belfast and one from Dublin playing in the Gaeltacht finals

Also best of luck to the Slaughtneil camogs who play Loughguile on Saturday in the Ulster Senior camogie final replay. Followed by the footballers who take on Derrygonnelly in the Ulster Senior Football quarter-final on Sunday. Serious achievement by a serious club. A product of all the hard work put in by the players, management and club members over the years. Thoroughly deserved

They probably have more Irish there than the teams in the 'real' Gaeltacht anyway.

Slaughtneil have just added the Ulster Senior Camogie title to the list of club successes. Beat a seriously tough Loughguille team in the replay this afternoon!!! What an unbelievable achievement for the club

Would be great to see the footballers giving it a rattle. They'll be hard to beat but to do a provincial treble would be a hell of a big ask! By no means impossible though. One game at a time.....
