Complete lack of respect being shown to Kerry minors

(Oldest Posts First)

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned on any other forums or if anyone feels the same as myself on the issue, but did anyone look at how the Kerry minors were treated upon winning yesterday?

While the Kerry captain made his speech and the players came up to raise the trophy, the 1991 Down jubilee team were brought out and introduced to the crowd. There was something very odd about seeing a minor team lifting that trophy one by one and having a panel of Down men on the pitch below them looking up as their names are called out.

Then there was the lap of honour, which must be rather difficult for the players to do when they will be parading a trophy on front of mostly Dublin and Mayo fans.

In addition to all this, the number of fans from both Kerry and Galway was very low. If there's not much interest in watching an U18 competition I don't think there'll be an awful lot more for an U17 competition.

interest in watching minor football has nothing with lowering the age to 17. Mayo and Dublin fans watched and enjoyed the game but could hardly be expected to maintain interest in the post match Kerry celebrations when our own teams were about to take the field for a much bigger prize.

It was a mess and the same a fortnight earlier when Tipp minors won the hurling and their jubilee team was being introduced to the crowd. Poor timetabling.

I thought it was strange; why they couldn't have waited a few minutes before introducing the Down team. Sure the Dublin team were in no rush into the pitch.

I wouldn't expect the nervous Mayo and Dublin fans to be celebrating with the minors lap of honour. Overall I felt the crowd was decent enough towards them. Kerry's allocation for tickets was very small (I presume Galways was the same) so extremely difficult to get a ticket.

This superb Kerry minor team also had no homecoming parade because of a cynical moneymaking ploy to introduce them at a club match.
Shocking treatment of an outstanding team.

I read online somewhere that there's going to be a 'homecoming event' at the county finals but that a number of these lads will actually be playing in these finals and won't get to enjoy the occasion with the rest of their team mates? Whatever the outcome, they should have had a homecoming the day after, it's not often any team does back to back never mind 3 in a row and that should be acknowledged regardless of what level they play at.

I thought it was strange when they were going past the Canal End on their lap of honour while the Down '91 team were introduced.

Congratulations to them on their win. Galway played a big part too in an entertaining final.

I saw a lot of class shown by the Kerry squad afterwards. Patiently waiting as supporters including children stopped outside their team bus in the Cusack carpark to get photos taken with the Markham Cup. A beautiful touch.

The whole end of game situation needs to be reviewed in my opinion at the end of the minor match on All Ireland day. The GAA could not wait to end the speech from the Archbishop of Cashel a few years ago and were afraid to trust the minor captains - and now we have the handing over of the trophy... and off they go!
Last Sunday we then had a major change where players from the great Down team of 25 years ago were introduced in 3's and as they were being introduced the minor team ran alongside them! The whole situation was not working to plan at all!!!

I think the minor captains should be allowed make a speech...
And I think the winning team of 25 years ago should be introduced on their own and not in 3's.
The amount of time after the minor game leading up to the senior match is long, and I think those flag wavers need to have a break... spend time on the minors and on the winning team of 25 years previous.

We all like to reminisce and remember the great wins of those of years gone by and we need to trust the minors and give them their time to thank those who they need to thank.

The Kerry minors were a reminder as well to enjoy our few years on the quiet side. Like the late 80's and early 90's, it's time for others to make hay while the sun is shining for them! ;)

Kerry have done the right thing.

There's nothing as bad as counties raising youngsters up on a pedestal for winning AI's and then they never fulfill their potential.

For that's all an AI minor title is, a sign of potential.

That would be taking sports psychology to a new Stalinist level. You should enjoy your final, especially if you win it.
