Hurler of the Year 2016

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I just wanted to get the opinion of the hurling community on here as to whom they think should get the POTY award. I watched the sunday game last night and Seamus Callanan received the majority of votes from the panel of 7 which I understood considering his performance yesterday. I'm definitely no hurling expert and would be you typical armchair supporter but I couldn't believe that none of the 7 panelist even mentioned Austin Gleeson's name. I know he had a poor game in the Munster final but Waterford had a freak bad day. I thought in every other game he played in he was absoultely outstanding and a shoe in for POTY but that's not obviously the case.

I know these awards are usually given to a player from the winning team but I thought Gleeson was an exceptional case as was Bernard Brogan in 2010 in the football. As I said i'm no hurling expert so would appreciate the views of the hurling folk.

You kind of answered your own question. The margins are fine in hurling. Gleeson had a bad day against Tipp. But we know now that they are the best team at the moment. You can't therefore have a bad game against the best team and still be considered for POTY. Seamus Callinan, Paudie Maher and Cathal Barrett are the contenders for me. The former is a shoe in.

Callinan was unlucky in 2014 and 2015 not to win so Austin will have to wait.

John McGrath might pip him for Young player of the year.

I think Eoin Murphy might have stopped John McGrath getting it with his unreal save. If John scored that and the one that he scuffed when he was pulling on the ball on the ground he'd surely have got it. I think Paudie Maher should get it because he was good all year but I reckon Callanan will get it because of his performance on Sunday.
Will Ronan Maher pip Gleeson for Young Hurler?

John mc can't get young player of the year. Glesson has that wrapped up anyway. Player of the year will go to Seamie but for me Paudie Maher was outstanding in every game this year and should be hurler of the year

I sometimes feel the player of the year award isn't solely for that year alone but over the last couple of years. Callanan has been nominated on couple of occasions in the last few years and even though he probably hasn't been the outstanding hurler this year he probably has over the last 2/3 years. It's the same in the football most years. I remember when Lacey got footballer of the year in 2012 most Donegal supporters will agree that McFadden was our best player that year but Lacey was brilliant in 2011 and followed it up with a good year in 2012 and therefore was the popular choice with the media.

Very true. Callinan was far better the last 2 years but looks likely to get it. If he had a poor final and Tipp lost he wouldn't have got an All Star

Do you not have to be under 21 to be YPOTY? If so, John McGrath is out. Gleeson deserves that anyway. John McGrath is brilliant though and will get an All-star. He will be one of 5 starting forwards for Tipp on Sunday to get one.

John McGrath turned 22 in July, so is eligible for the YPOTY. I'm sure all age qualifications, U21, Minors etc. go by how old you are on the 1st January of the Championship year.

Young player has to be playing U21. John Mc can't get it.

Are you having a laugh?
Subbed off in the Munster final, had a great game against Kilkenny in the drawn game, did some spectacular things in the replay but also did some stupid things which were not highlighted.
Deserves YPOTY but not HOTY that accolade is between Pauric Maher and Seamie and Seamie .
