Music at the end of matches

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was at the All Ireland finals yesterday while the matches were absolutely brilliant. There was one part of the occasion that i found to be in poor taste. At the end of both games the song of the winning county was blared over the tannoy (in both cases yesterday slievanamon). I have noticed this phenomenon in recent years at other all ireland series games, and i do not think it is right or fair to subject losing players to this.

Players are on the pitch in tears after being beaten having defeat rubbed in to them by whats played over the tannoy. Young lads of 17 and 18 years old having been beaten in the biggest game of their lives having the defeat rubbed in by playing slievenamon after the game (albeit not deliberately on anybodys part) It does not matter that it was my own beloved Limerick that were affected yesterday, if we had won and the same thing done to the Tipperary players it would be equally horrible. The GAA is a great organisation and does the vast majority of thing right ,but lets get rid of this music at the end of games. It adds nothing to the occasion.

One other small thing the minor lap of honour overlapped with the jubilee team presentation and they both took from each other - if possible and if time allows it might be no harm to delay the presentation by 5 - 10 minutes. Otherwise 2 great matches great day -well done tipp - just wonder we i ever see ourselves win it

It adds to the atmosphere for the winning team IMO. Whats the alternative? Silence?

I see where your coming from but sometimes it does add to the atmosphere.

I remember beating Cork in 2012 in the semi Final. Nobody from Donegal left the stadium for about 30 minutes. There was singing dancing and all sort of jubilation and was a memory I will never forget (even more than the all Ireland if that makes sense).

Did I not hear the Script song Hall of Fame blasted out when Liam was lifted?? Was cringeworthy.

the alternative is to let the winning teams supporters cheer and celebrate - without being drowned out, this is far more atmospheric

Disagree with the OP - love the tunes coming on for the winners. (although I must've heard Slievenamon 6 or 7 times yesterday over the course of the day).

It'll be the blue hills of Breffni one day and I for one won't hold back!

It depends on the song I suppose. I remember when we lost in 2012 to Donegal and while I was gutted I did appreciate what it meant to the Donegal crowd and The Hills of Donegal was blaring as the players and fans celebrated, it's something they will never forget and the atmosphere was unbelievable. The likes of The Script Hall of Fame is just pants and shouldn't be played! If Mayo win Sunday week and The Saw Doctors are blaring it will be the nicest and most emotional song I will have ever heard in my life!!

I don't mind it at all, i don't think hearing a song is going to make the losing team feel any worse than they already feel and I guarantee you they'd appreciate their song being played if the shoe was on the other foot.

Don't like the tacky pop songs but a song specific to the winning county is fine and can only add to the enjoyment for the winning fans.

in 2014 after being beaten in an epic semi final against kilkenny what was played over the tannoy - that well known gaa ballad of "cool for cats" by squeeze - most of our lads were lying on the ground in tears and to have that played over they tannoy was horrible

I'd imagine the players will be gutted regardless of whether the other teams anthem is played or not.
I for one like it. it's a huge day for a county, as the mayo person above referred to already can you imagine the green and red of mayo playing in two weeks time. its a memory that will never be forgotten and a song that will fill people with nostalgia for ever more.
how i long to hear Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff in the same circumstances

Janesboro I think you notice it more than most because it is nearly always the song of whoever we play that is being blared out.... Sad but true.

Personally I don't mind it at all. I just can't wait for the day we finally win an all Ireland and Horse Outside by the Rubberbandits comes on....

theweanling (Cavan) -winning an all ireland is a great day and dont need music to embellish it - i just think its something the losing players could do without

I think the winning coury deserve it, let's be honest over the course of our lives we will love it and hate it.

Would prefer The Rare Ould Times, to Molly Malone personally.

I have no problem with it. Adds to the occasion.

I'd imagine it will be The boys from the county Mayo if Mayo win next weekend
You are right - I did enjoy The hills of Donegal and Las Vegas in the hills of Donegal in 2012. I was lucky as I saw Donegal win Sam in 1992 but a lot of Donegal people 2012 was their first time.
I would not play pop songs -- it should be an old Irish song about the winning county. Don't forget we are all suppose to be Gaels. I hate pop music blaring out in Croke park.
The winning county has a good right to celebrate , especially a county who have not won a final for years or are winning for the first time.
To the losers --- if you can't beat em join em -- sing along with the winners. Once you are still alive after the event that is all that matters
And to Mayo fans if ye won Sunday week , well after the final whistle ye are in for the best evening of your lives . Same again Monday morning and just think of Sam arriving in Castlebar.
I can tell ye it will be the time of your lives. GOOD LUCK

Class Mike got a good laugh from horse outside. I think it's brilliant to hear the winning County song after the game, it really adds to it.
