Fair play GAA style

Tipp centre back gets black card within 10 minutes.
Sean Kavanagh gets sent off despite spending most of the game complaining to the referee about Lee Keegan fouling him off the ball.
The same Lee Keegan who targeted Diarmuid Connolly off the ball last year and ended up getting both Connolly and Kavanagh sent off.
This morning on RTE's "Morning Ireland", we had Bernard Flynn advocating to Kerry that they needed to target Diarmuid Connolly like Lee Keegan targeted Diarmuid Connolly. He continued to say that they have to do this and recommended a certain Kerry player for the job.
The poor Tipp guy was honest and got shafted. Even John O'Mahoney stated during the week that if the Tipp guy was playing for a "major" football county, he wouldn't have got a black card. And on that subject, the black card is a joke, how many times have you seen a referee issue a yellow card when a black card was the correct sanction. Get rid of the black card and re-introduce the Sin Bin but administer it properly this time! If it can work in Rugby, it can work in GAA.
However, it is disturbing that an RTE pundit is advocating foul play before a match and it is even more disturbing that the GAA has tolerated in two of their major matches last year and this year with no sanction of the officials employed to ensure fair play. Hawkeye was introduced to compensate for blind umpires but what will they introduce to compensate for blind linesmen and blind referees ?
The referees greatest cop-out is to give two yellow cards to two guys who end up on the ground, thereby giving a huge "well done" to the guy who instigated it to try to put his opponent off his game.
If the GAA doesn't sort out these issues in the short term, attendances will continue to drop. A sold out Dublin v Kerry All-Ireland semi-final can't disguise some of the other poor attendances this year.

Scrap the black card and forget the sin-bin. If they fudge the black v yellow card decisions they'll , more likely, fudge the sin-bin calls too.Referees should consistently be refereeing the red and yellow cards. They should get more help from more proactive refereeing from umpires and linesmen. Maybe umpires could be another set of eyes on the end line beside the goalpost they're umpiring ? For them all it's a thankless job. You never hear about the good ref as things run smoothly. Maybe they need more training and regular contact with other officials on how the standard can be improved. Rather than get a bollocking for making some mistakes the better refs could advise on how to referee it better the next game. We all seem to have opinions on referees but the vast majority of us are reffing on the ditch.

First thing about keegan .His remarks about targeting Connoly are just that. He is probably Dublin's best player , obviously he would have to be targeted . I don't have any problem with the way Keegan plays usually apart from if there is incident when he should have been sent off or got a black card and didn't.If he wants to sacrifice himself with a yellow in the hope the man he is marking will eventually get sent off , fair enough. It is all part of the modern game. I'm not a fan of sledging though and when it gets personal a line needs to be drawn..but this marking players out of the game has been happening in the GAA since its beginings.

Regarding the Tipp player.Aye, it was harsh. I do agree in the likes of Keegan ,boyle,Connoly ,Kavanagh probably wouldn't have got the black so early in the game for such a challange..I don't even think that was a black in the first place but these things happen sometimes.

I don't think these incidents are causing the drop in attendance, it is probably more do with price and gulf in class between certain counties. Why would anyone playing Dublin outside of Tyrone,Kerry ,Mayo and Donegal even bother going to a game these days when they hammer every team outside that by ten points plus.Even Kerry got a drumming in the league final.Plus Tipperary would hardly fill croke park when their footballers are playing, just not the same level of support there.

Your first post and you have managed to cast a Mayo player in a negative light on three occasions. Welcome to Hoganstand, you'll fit right in.

I agree on re-introducing the sin bin but just because it works in rugby doesn't mean it will work in GAA but it would certainly work better than the black card or a simple yellow card. Giving 2 yellows is to help stop each player continuing to pull and drag and potentially get one player a red card

Something more than a yellow and red card is needed and that's very clear by all work being put in on systems like sin bin, black card in recent years. Yes Linesmen and umpires need to help more but that still doesn't mean a sin bin isn't needed.
