Which individual has had the most impact on the game in the last 20 years?

Off the top of my head a few contenders:

Brian Cody
Jim McGuinness
Mickey Harte
Dessie Farrell

A sad Indictment but the most influential have been messrs Spillane and Brolly as their critique has yielded rule changes and central council seem to listen to their sage advice rather than the players or punters.

Unfortunately I agree those pair are well up there.

It's hard to think of anyone really influential from their play.

Cluxton with his short kick outs and long range free taking probably has the best case.

Pat Spillane bitterness towards northern teams was disgrace and the derogatory term puke football. Instead of praising the Eoin Mullingans, Sean Cavanaghs and Brian Mcguigans he chose to pick on Tyrone negatives. Yet when tag kennally broke Nicholas murphy, dara ose putting knees into same back, Billy John keane kicking ball away this was portrayed as cute hoorism by kerry players.

Jaysus JimmyFloyd, for someone with only 15 posts I think every single one of them has been a dig at Kerry.

Weren't you the lad on here after the Donegal/Kerry match a couple of weeks ago trying to claim that the Kerry hurlers were also a cynical and dirty bunch?

FYI: We won the same amount of games as you lot in 1B this year.

What would the Rackards make of that if they were still around pucking sliothars :D

Yeah, has to be Spillane. He's the Shepherd and so, so many sheep followed him.

Probably the person to come up with the idea to finance Dublin to the top of the pile to be honest

Football - Cluxton. The man literally changed the way the game is played
Hurling - Cody. No Brainer

Wow. Another thoroughly predicable jab at Dublin from TheMaster. Let it go, let it go......

On the topic, I would think Cluxton is up there, he has changed the way the game is played. His restarts are super quick and usually super accurate, short or long. There are now two rules at congress in two years that have come in just because of him! No ball boys and the mark!

McGuinness brought a team from nowhere to win an All Ireland. His template has been copied, some would argue it's hurting the game as a spectacle, others would say that's just modern football. However, you cannot argue its effectiveness.

Various GAA presidents have let hurling go to shit. They have not used their influence to address the need to expand hurling and fund counties with hurling heritage. The AI Hurling has been predictable. Not enough counties play the game, and fewer at a high level.

As much as I respect Mickey Harte Rossie15.....

The most influential person during that semi final in 2003 was the referee. Tyrones speed to close down was impressive, their tackling was to describe it lightly, illegal!!! Every time I see clips of it I'm like "How was nobody booked there.....and how did Kerry not get a free?"

Harte is a brilliant manager though. Credit where it's due.

There doesn't seem to be anything particularly inaccurate with what JimmyFloyd has said in that post.

Why don't you try to outline what's wrong with what he has said instead of flinging excrement?

It's the style of football he introduced and that semi final in 03 was the start of it .. hence the reason he was the biggest influence on football over last 20 years imo
Jim mcguiness took the harte defensive footbal template a step further in 11 and 12 But it was harte that ended the traditional style of backs v forwards football
It took kerry a number of years to get to grasps with it and teams like Galway cork meath who traditionally were very strong have never really got to grips with it of u ask me

Because greatpoint what is the point of trying to be rationale with fools?

I've seen the things he posts, he has some bee in his bonnet against Kerry, so its much more fun to put him in his place.

Calling it excrement is a bit OTT don't you think?

In Donegal, without a shadow of a doubt Jim McGuinness. His influence has seeped down to club football. Teams are way more disciplined and train harder and faster then ever before. Possibly even to the detriment of the enjoyment of the whole thing? But maybe that's just me, I am older and recently retired so my old legs probably just didn't have the power in them anymore that they used to!

Nationally, I think the advent of social media and proliferation of its users has had a massive influence. Everyone has an opinion and isn't afraid to express it. Things get blown out of proportion and over analysed to the point where an archaic Congress feels the need the make preposterous changes just for the sake of it e.g. the mark.
