How best to save International Rules ?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With the IRS on its death bed, how would you save the Series ?

In lieu of the hybrid rules, why not play gaelic in one half and aussie in the other. The ball changes at half time but say the IRS goal posts remain (shaped as I H I).

It's an exhibition game. Great call to reduce it to a one off game. AFL were suggesting next year's game be brought to the USA. You might get to see it stateside omahant!

With the rules adjusted to suit the hosts, a la the kickout beyond the 45 (should be adopted in gaelic as well), I predict a hammering - home team by 30+ points

Playing it in a neutral venue with a large expat population might be a smart move. London or East Coast USA perhaps? Though London isn't really neutral... Be hard to find a pitch big enough as well.

At least it is only one game, it's a start.

A 'start' after 30 yrs. If this is to be viable, it needs a 3-match series, say with a 3rd 'World' team added.

Hand it over to FIFA they are well versed in the dark arts of magic ... Trick number one Lets give Russia a world cup A country with a 11 different time zones hush now !!!! don't mention the brown envelopes and their human rights record . Trick number two lets award Qatar a world cup with their billions air conditioning won't be a problem in 40o heat lets put Jack Charlton in charge of the water bottles , sush don't mention brown envelopes and a cool 20o winter , Trick number three lets have an independent enquiry into bribery into the 2018 and 2022 world cup bids and then blame Ingerland . FIFA can work miracles

I sometimes wonder about people. The Railway Cup is seriously as dead as any competition can be, very few people care about it and even fewer people show up to the games. Typical response is "What a disgrace, this is a great competition which should be promoted, we'll get 80'000 for the finals like the old days".

The IRS on the other hand, regularly gets 20-30'000 fans at the matches, home and away, jersies are sold and people are interested. But apparently its the competition that's dead and needs scrapping.

so when is this nonsense of a game happening?....hope it doesn't distract too much from the real football in the provincial club championships...time to end this excuse for a game once and for all...and time for the gaa to put the same effort into inter provincial championships

IRS isn't a nonsense of a game
GAA putting in extra effort into interprovincial championships wont do much to help halt its decline

With the one off game and Ireland's warmup game, will a province get to take on Australia next year?

absolutely no point in trying to save this game which in fact is not even a identifiable sport made up of a hybrid set of rules....you do not see kids out playing international rules (it does not even have a name)..instead those same kids in ireland and australia are out playing gaelic football and aussie rules...time to bring the curtain down on what is a game that is long past its sell by date if it ever had one

I disagree with stopping it. It gives the players a chance to represent their country and to "tour". This happens in Football and Rugby all the time. To me it is a "jewel in the crown" of the GAA. It gives amateur players a valuable chance to see professional sportsmen at work. The greatest ever event at Pearse stadium Salthill Galway was in my opinion the International Rules match. A full house- biggest ever attendance at the ground- and a wonderful match. So roll on the Internaional Rules. A gem.

Unless you are an elite inter county player constantly being pestered to play for Ireland, what difference does it make to the naysayers whether the series happens or not? Why the vehement hate for the international rules? What has it to do with you?

You can simply not attend if you dont want. Nobody asks you to watch or pay money towards the series. It probably costs very little to buy the gear and training materials. The only major cost is the flights to Australia. It wouldnt surprise me if the series actually turns a profit, considering they regularly get 25'000+ spectators through the gate, and this coming match is sold out.

I still just wonder why the hate for the series? Even if it's "nonsense", how does it affect you in any way?
