I have posted something similar on the Derry Forum. But would like to see who you all think the next Derry Manager should be. My opinion would be the only three from Derry who are capable of the job are Mickey Moran, Anthony Tohill or Damien McErlain, I would like to see Damien stay with the Minors for a couple of years yet or take the under 21 team, Because he has been taking the same boys for years and they would they develop well with him as they have been great in Minor and if it wasn't for him the Minors would not be where they are at, he would make them capable for the Senior panel, then he would become the Senior manager with the same bunch of lads, that should be the plan anyways! Mickey Moran, Must be one of the best managers of all time in my opinion, he has a decent enough good for taking inter-county but he has taken this Sleachtneil team to a different level, probably in the top 3 in the country, Taking a small rural team like Sleachtneil to two All Ireland finals in three years is a massive achievement. Every player in Derry would love to play for him and there would be no issues, he would get the best squad possible and take them very far, Sadly Extremely unlikely but anything could happen, he would be amazing for Derry. Anthony Tohill, would be a very honest manager and I think he would do very well with them. oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 06/08/2017 00:58:07 2029559 Link 0 |
Malachy O'Rourke - practically a done deal by all accounts

Who told you this?

Yeah because I'm going to name who told me on here in a public.... someone normally reliable in the goings on in Derry football, only time will tell if true

Ah yes the old reliable friend with inside knowledge. Who probably heard it from Malachy O'Rourke's 3rd cousin's aunt with he was in the pub. You want to put a bet on that O'Rourke won't be the next Derry manager? The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 06/08/2017 20:21:29 2029902 Link 0 |
Must agree with you, hard to believe. Time will tell though.

So I'll ask again do you expect me to put someone's name out here in a public forum? Catch a grip man. The thread was set up to discuss this very subject, if you don't want to see comment on it don't click on it. It may turn out to be true, it may not - only saying what I've been told - you okay with that? Its an anonymous forum not as if I'm trying to show how much I personally am in the know (which I'm not anymore than the next man) so less of the brothers neighbour bs.

You must be an extremely gullible person to believe Malachy O'Rourke would become Derry manager. To put it on here is ridiculous. I think you are been that 'guy'. You get that at all games and on here, spreading rumours that some drunk told you in the pub and you believe it. Then come on here and act as if your Mr.GAA. 90% of the time they are BS. Frustrates the hell out of me. Try to look at things a little bit more realistically. Is it not more realistic that the minor manager who has guilded them to all irelands would get the job? Or Micky Moran? Or Paul McIvor who's dad is the director of football? The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 07/08/2017 15:13:31 2030287 Link 1 |
I can't see Malachy O'Rourke leaving Monaghan, its a project he has invested so much time and effort into, which has produced amazing results considering the population size of Monaghan. The man delivered 2 Ulster Championships, brought them from Division 3 to Division 1 of the National League. It will be hard for him to walk away from all of that unless he sees a project that he could take to the next level, as in All Ireland titles. Ok where to start with this? First why do you think its so ridiculous that O'Rourke will go to Derry? There is a feeling within some in Monaghan that its time for a change (just look at their forum and you will get the feel for that). So if he becomes free do you not think Derry would be very interested in securing his services? Do you not believe he would be interested in taking on another role and staying in county management? You don't know me so you don't know what sort of "guy" I am. But I believe you are a bit peeved that I called you on your ridiculous suggestion that I name the person who told me this on a public forum. Fir the record the guy is tea-total so definitely not a drunk in the pub. When do i pretend to be Mr GAA? Any examples? I already said I'm no more in the know than anyone else. Maybe you feel the guys you named are more realistic, fair enough, you may know more about Derry GAA than I do, personally i would expect the minor manager to move up to U20's a la Jack O'Connor and can't see them going back to Mickey Moran. McIvor is possible but doesn't have the experience or track record of say O'Rourke but we'll see. Tbh I'm not actually that bothered who gets it, only answered the opening post who asked who did people think were in the running, sorry if that frustrated you so much benched (Tyrone) - Posts: 534 - 07/08/2017 15:46:17 2030323 Link 0 |
Benched I owe you an apology-I went off on one yesterday and it was totally unfair. You are a good poster who talks sense. O'Rourke has as much a chance as the next man to take the job. Great manager who would do a great job with Derry. I would like to see a strong Derry again, some off the matches I've seen were Tyrone and Derry going at it. And O'Rourje would certainly help Derry progress. Apologies again. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 08/08/2017 14:24:37 2031041 Link 0 |
Derry are in a bad place at the moment and I can not see a top manager taking on the job this time. 20 years ago great players, great club scene, schools football etc it would have been a great job but is the material there at this moment (Damien Cassidy does not seem to think so). You are taking over a third division team who have not won Ulster in 20 years and it appears the clubs are not behind the county team. I say this as someone who loved watching the Ulster championship in the 1990,s when Derry and Down were two of the powerhouses and the rivalry with Tyrone would have been strong. It's hard to believe how easy Tyrone have had it over Derry in the last two years and it will be hard to turn it around. Byanthon (Tyrone) - Posts: 1780 - 08/08/2017 16:38:51 2031154 Link 0 |
Not a bother. Would certainly be great to get the old rivalry with Derry up and going again. Some of mine and probably your own best memories of following Tyrone have came from some of the great battles and victories over Derry - thinking 95 & 96 right away. Unfortunately some of the worse involve Derry as well such as losing both the National League final & Preliminary round of the championship to them within a fortnight in 92 along with the All-Ireland quarter final in 01. Coming to think if it maybe I don't miss them that much! benched (Tyrone) - Posts: 534 - 08/08/2017 17:00:37 2031168 Link 0 |

110%, he would do a good enough job with them I think.

It looks like Damien McErlain is the new manager, not 100% confirmed yet, but think it will happen, no problem with that at all, think it's great. He will for definite get Derry back to their old ways of attacking football. Players in Derry should be looking to play for him, he will bring in talented youth and good experience, some of the boys who left Barton should be coming back now. What do you all think of this? oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 31/08/2017 11:02:23 2041057 Link 0 |
Derry should do what Tyrone did and what Kerry will likely do. Keep McElain involved with what looks like a talented group of minors and develop them further at under 21's. Get a someone like Baker Bradley in the mean time for a couple of years at senior and instill a bit of confidence and belief. When that fizzles out then McErlain with a talented group of younsters is your man. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2385 - 31/08/2017 13:12:35 2041138 Link 0 |
Fergal McCusker has done pretty well with the U21's, Ulster runners up and we ran Donegal's U21's very close up to the sending off. GaryMc82 (Derry) - Posts: 3017 - 31/08/2017 16:34:52 2041249 Link 0 |
It's official, McErlain is the manager. Think he will do a great job for us. Will he bring success bring success back to Derry football? I think he will. oakleafersir (Derry) - Posts: 808 - 31/08/2017 21:14:45 2041355 Link 0 |
