Cavan Hurling

(Oldest Posts First)

It might pass most people by, but some news is that the Cavan Senior hurlers beat Fermanagh today by 4-17 to 0-17, an emphatic win in any mans language. It is their first win since the team reformed this year, and their first win since 2010. We should take a moment to appreciate where this team has come from. Castigated from all sides, the panel was done away with after an (admittedly) poor 2011 season - although I would point to this being an anamoly, the 2010 season was decent with the team competitive with 2 wins out of 5 and close losses in the other 3 games (but nobody ever looks at that when discussing where Cavan hurling went wrong all those years ago, they all fixated on 2011).

They had no league campaign this year so entered the Lory Meagher kinda cold, but they kept at it, trained hard and had good numbers at training all year. They were unlucky to lose to Lancashire last week after leading going into injury time at the end of the game, but made up for it with a great win today. There are some great young hurlers coming up through underage development squads, and hopefully the senior team will be here to stay so they have something to aim for. Weaker counties in both codes are rarely bigged up and are constantly put down, but lets give these lads the praise they deserve. There is an appetite for hurling in Cavan despite what the naysayers constantly say. Well done lads

While it's good to have them back in the fold, I wouldn't really be shouting from the rooftops about it. They beat a county with one hurling club in a dead rubber, and according to the match report they had three players from an All Ireland winning Dublin club score about 2-11 from play for them.

A good result alright, but nothing earth shaking.

Dude, it's their first win in 7 years. Never said it was earth shaking, baby steps and all that. It's something that they can now work on and improve on for next year It is a big deal for the hurling community in Cavan and shows that we can compete.

Fair play to them and their supporters and their perseverance. Proper supporters sticking with their team in the lean times and hopefully will have more to cheer about from now on.

There is surely more than one hurling club in Fermanagh. They would be hardly be consistently fielding an inter county hurling team if that were the case.

He is right, There is only one adult hurling team in the county and we have football men on shouting about KK's attitude to football. Fermanagh GAA should be ashamed of itself.

Welldon to cavan and to carlow yesterday and to their players and supporters , i know neither result will send ripples thourhgt the gaa world but to those counties they are massive results its their all ireland final

success is relative and for cavan and carlow success is winning a game , just doing that can bring unbridled joys to supporters same for my beloved limerick when we play clare in both hurling and football next week ,

3 years ago a program was started to get underage hurling going again in Fermanagh. There were 6 Clubs promoting Hurling & Camogie up to U12 age: St. Patrick's Lisbellaw, Knocks Grattans, Lisnaskea Emmetts, Bellanaleck, St. Joseph's Ederney & Erne Gaels GAA (Beleek). I'm not sure how it's progressing but I think 4 of those clubs are fielding at U14 now.

They are. Fair play to Lisbellaw for keeping it going!

The Fermanagh SHC Final is always Lisbellew and Lisnaskea. You would'nt be welcome mentioning Hurling in any pub in Lisbellew its just a centre for surrounding gaels to Hurl in.

Not true. Lisnaskea haven't fielded senior for a number of years. And Lisbellaw are a hurling-only club (many of their players play football for same parish GFC Maguiresbridge). You don't know what you're talking about.

Fair play to Cavan. Men like Seamus Hughes and Gabriel Shalvey. Boys with as much love and passion as Brian Cody.

One lad is from Galway, who previously hurled for Longford. Dunno, after that!
