Joe McMahon has retired from inter county duty.
Great person and a great player over the years. Hope the injuries clear up so he can continue with his club.
All the best.

Joe Mc Mahon was a brilliant player for Tyrone. He had some stamina. A brilliant defender and could score. For me his stand out moment was the goal against the Dubs in 2008. It epitomised everything that was class about Joe.
He's also got a great personality. He will be sorely missed in Tyrone football. They could certainly have done with him as an impact sub this year. People like Joe are not easy replaced.

A quality player who was comfortable in any position from 2-12. Scored 1-1 against Dublin in 2008 AI Quarter final playing wing forward and went back to full back line to mark twin towers in final against Kerry that year. Restricting Ronan Clarke to a point in AI 2005 semi final was one of his finest games in a Tyrone jersey.

I'm saddened. One of those players, in the Sean Lowry mould (watch Laochra Gael if you don't know who this colossus is), who could capably play in almost any position. Ask the Gooch or Pat Spillane to play full-back and spend a day marking a man, and you'd be asked if you'd 55 heads. Yet the likes of McMahon and Lowry took things like that in their stride. Those to me are the complete footballers, sometimes almost unseen---the ultimate team player. Not those who can do everything brilliantly from one or two positions, but who perhaps sacrifice their own game for a job that needs to be done. That Joe never got an All-Star doesn't mean one iota to me, as he was more than an All-Star, he was an every-position-star; the quintessential team man!

Guys like Joe are probably victims of their own capability and versatility, rather than focusing on being a specialist in one specific position.

All the best JOE and thanks for the displays and the memories; you brought that Star Tower down. And your brother, took down the Prince Tower. Great day, great memories!

Part of the great Tyrone team of the 00's that dominated all around them, sad to see another laochra hang up his boots especially after a hard time with injury.

Wish him all the best and good times with his club.

Super player-the kind you want on your team rather than against you.

Joe McMahons finest moment was the 2008 decider against Kerry. The teams looked inseparable on paper in the previews of the game, save for the Kerry left corner forward position where Tommy Walsh was expected to have too much power for Ciaran Gourley. That advantage had pre match opinion leaning in Kerrys favour, but a late late change saw McMahon dropping in there instead. The sight of him and the brother slowly trotting into position against Walsh and Donaghy was epic. It also tilted the balance decisively toward Tyrone that day.

I would go as far as saying one of Tyrones best ever players. Loved watching him play. Such a warrior.

A brilliant player and a brilliant career. Will miss watching that lazy style. Joe was a great 'quarterback' player because of his intelligence, composure and brilliant vision and passing abilities. Those, together with his ability to take a score, meant he could play anywhere on the field and make a success of it.

He was a great soccer player too in his day, played milk cup and as a central midfielder for one of the local teams in Omagh, where he won a few leagues and cups. Was unbelievably skilful on the ball, with that same languid style. I wouldn't be surprised if burnout was a major cause of his injury problems because there wasn't a day would go by when he wasn't training for either football or soccer and he would usually play games in both sports every saturday. There was a famous rumour in the CBS where he went to school that he finished the tape on the bleep test!

We often hear about footballers described as 'being able to play anywhere', but what made Joey special was that he could play anywhere at a very high level.

On so many occasions, I watched him excel at wing-forward or midfield, only to be asked to switch mid-game to the full-back line to take care of a dangerous forward. Invariably, he would put the shackles on his man and still look like the best player on the field. To see a player switch so effortlessly during an intercounty game is really rare, and is a testament to Joey's skillset.

Big and strong, but with a great engine, he could get around the field as well as any wing-back/forward. Good in the air and with great positional awareness meant that he could play in the full-back line or midfield. He also had great feet and frequently would fire over points from outside the 45.

A brilliant, all-around footballer who I'll miss seeing play for Tyrone.

Remember it well, there was a great sense of anticipation over that battle once the teams lined out
Walsh and Donaghy didn't get a sniff that day

One of the best utility players to grace the pitch - he made a career at excelling in any position full back line with his bro in 2008 and that goal against the Dubs - loss to Tyrone no doubt but shows the stress these guys put on their bodies that injury ends their careers.
