Is it time for less televised games?

(Oldest Posts First)

Amidst all the talk about club championships, structures, compressing the calendar, etc, to me the big anomaly in the room is the amount of games shown live on TV.
Which got me thinking, even the biggest Provincial championships could be ran off in about 5-6 weeks max if we forgot about the apparent need to show so many games on TV. It is currently played over 9. The Munster Hurling Championship could be played over about 4 weeks, there is only 4 games in it and that allows for a week before the final.
Either that, or we need to start playing quarter finals, semi finals, on Saturday evenings and Sunday's, but play them all the same weekend. That means that if you have say 4 quarter finals in the Ulster championship, you can show one on Saturday evening, one on Sunday.
Or else, we do like TG4 - show 1 game live and more deferred, etc.
It would also boost attendances at the games I suspect.
Again, I am viewing this from a club players perspective and maybe showing less games on TV frees up more weekends for club matches in most counties? This may have also been discussed on one of the many other threads regarding championship structures, etc.
Obviously there is a potential revenue hit and turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

And deprive the rest of the GAA mad country the chance to see big games. Limiting GAA tv exposure would be a huge backward step in promotion, money and entertainment.

I think they should broadcast more games, the more the better, and give those extra games to Sky Sports

i dont think the original poster is suggesting not showing big games,he is suggesting having 2-3 games from a province on the same weekend.
idea has merit to be fair.

Idea has merit and would make for great gas weekends. But you would need to get comprehensive highlights program not like the rubbish league highlights. Not sure of any broadcaster will invest in that.

I feel like I would be stuck in a time warp , forever in the 70s or 80s.... Who does RTE radio commentary anyway these days?....

I was not suggesting we show less games per se, what I was suggesting was that you might have Armagh v Tyrone on Saturday evening and Derry and Donegal on the following day, rather than 1 game per weekend.
Lets face it, half of the games are not worth watching in every province!

When TV3 started showing GAA matches live between them and RTE they would be four matches live at the weekend. More of the same please.

You could run provincial championships off much quicker while still showing same number on tv just play more games on Saturdays and earlier on a Sunday. Play both a provinces semi finals on same weekend. Play more quarter finals same weekend.
Showing 1 game live and 1 deferred isnt the best option.

Why do you want less of all sport televised? You do know that tv income is huge funding for sports and without it sports are significantly less off and that affects funding at all levels of the game esp grassroots
