Venues for hurling

Would it be off any benefit to spreading the hurling gospel to play the national hurling league quarters semis and final at venues such as Brefni park, and Clones rather than always going to Thurles or Nowlan park where hurling is God anyway?

Well if you think I'm driving from South Wexford to Clones for a match you have another think coming.

They'd have to stick a net behind the goals in Clones first!

How far would you go? Where's the limit to your support of your county?

April fools day was last week wasn't it?

No april fools is well over. Were always hearing about how we need to promote the game in counties where its barley surviving. Well wouldn't bringing top class games involving the best players to those counties help? Imagine school kids from Cavan being brought to Breffni to see Tipp play Kilkenny in a league final. The effect that could have on them. Be worth more than sending any coach up to a club on a winters night Id bet

People saying I wouldn't travel from my county to there but id bet you'd be up in a flash if it was an all Ireland final. Your taking the selfish viewpoint of travelling outside your comfort zone. I'm thinking of the game as a whole and bringing it to people who never see top class games.

i think thats a brilliant idea brianmac. when i go to waterford matches id usually spend the night in thurles, kilkenny wherever the night before. ive never been to clones or the other footballing powerhouses...it would be great for the schoolkids too ... austin gleeson on loosing side last week in galway and was surrounded after by the galway kids...genuinely great idea brian.

Carlow got dragged up to a mucky Newry last week to play Antrim in the div2 final.

Conditions were awful with players on both side unable to get the sliotar up.

Lucky for the gaa that it was the div2 final so noone cared. If it had happened to kilkenny or tipp it could have been the end of hurling.

No point really. Cavan or monaghan if they joined together and got a hurley in every kids hand would still take about 50 years to become competitive. I'd say getting the likes of Antrim competitive is a better aim

Fine. And play the Ulster Senior Football Championship final in Nowlan Park.

The Hurling snobs are certainly circling the wagons on this suggestion.

When you say competitive do you mean competitive with Limerick or competitive with Tipp? It's just that there's probably a few decades in the difference.

Exactly junior judge. Kids from Monaghan Cavan Tyrone getting to see Austin Gleeson in the flesh and then meet him after the match for an autograph. The power of that on children can't be underestimated.

Well Limerick have beaten Tipp three times in the Munster Championship in the last ten, more than any other county. So though Tipp have probably beaten us more often games between these sides are seldom less that competitive.

It's an interesting idea in anyways. I'm surprised it hasn't been tried before now. I think Breffni Park would be a good shout. Good ground in a nice town. Newry would be a decent option too. If the likes of a Tipp/Kilkenny game they'd be in Newry in a couple of hours, 3 at most. It doesn't have to be done every year but would be a nice option.

When the new Casement is built it'd be a good option for League finals too, football and hurling.

Strange indeed.

Carlow to Newry would be a handy enough trip. Probably equal distance with the supporters coming from the Glens in anyways.

Great for the kids (if the parents would bring them along -- and there's no guarantee of that because they mightn't be interested enough) but completely useless in terms of promoting the game when the GAA culture in those parts is totally anti- hurling. You can't promote the game in a vacuum. For football-oriented club and county administrators in that geographical area, hurling would be tolerated only to the extent that it doesn't interfere with all things football. I'm not making a judgement call on this -- just stating the facts. just like the opposite might apply in Kilkenny or Tipp.

The implication that having to play a game in Newry is some sort of punishment speaks volumes.

I think it's a great idea. But would it work? Maybe also give out free tickets to schools or something also. The biggest thing would be to pack out the stadium regardless if half the tickets were free.
