Wexford hurlers

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'm a Wexford man. As most of the Wexford posters know, I'm dual and as much football as hurling. 50/50.

I must say I'm really disappointed by the television coverage of Wexford hurlers this year. They are really the story of the year. New manager, promotion to division 1A having beaten two favourites Limerick and Galway. Galway especially, winning having been 7 points down with 20 mins left playing into the breeze away in Pearse Park.

TG4 have shown no game live. RTE highlights on the league highlight programme has been scandalous in general, but Wexford have barely been shown at all. Even the Galway game, the game that would decide the league, merited only 2 minutes of coverage.

I really had hoped TG4 would show the Kilkenny v Wexford match live on Sunday as I cannot make it to Nowlan Park, but they're decided to show Waterford again in their match against Galway. Maybe RTE will show decent highlights on Sunday evening, but with 4 quarter-finals in hurling, plus the final round of football league games, I'm not holding my breath.

They never do show 1B games no matter who plays. Reason for not showing KK V Wexford check reason results, let's be honest KK could be capable of winning this by a cricket score(hope not). Waterford V Galway is the pick of the games.

They've had more Wexford coverage on TG4 GAA 2017 than on RTE League Sunday anyway.

TG4 are showing deferred coverage of the whole match at 5.40 pm. Not the same as watching it live I know, but if you can manage to avoid hearing the score, not to bad,

Wexford have been the story of the year alright. Next year they will be on the box far more as a result of their fine campaign

RTE /TG4 don't show much of Division 2 in the football either. It's just supply and demand, games that generate more general interest will always be shown on tv which will invariably be division 1 games.

Classic Davy Fitz team, train really hard early on and be bouncing in the league but come summer I don't see them setting the world alight. (But then neither will limerick)

Say what you like about Davy and Wexford, he knew he had to be ready for the challenge in the first 2 matches, had the lads fit and focused, and duly delivered.
I used to say I could not stand the man, but he has totally made me change my opinion of him.
I just hope we don't get a bad beating on Sunday, I fear though that Cody smells blood.
Would love if Wexford and Kilkenny returned to the battles of the 1980's and 1990's. I know plenty of Kilkenny people who would love that too.

Next Sunday will tell us a lot about Wexford. For the sake of morale they would want to give KK a game.

Would rather no coverage, the less the better, Wexford have won nothing yet, no team better than Kilkenny to extinguish any hope they have.
I dont care what anyone says there is never a bad Kilkenny team and they will want to prove a point.
Too many times I have travelled to Wexford/Kilkenny games with lots of hope, expectation and hype, and then leaving the ground ten minutes from the end with my tail between my legs. A good competitive game is needed Sunday.
Im sick of hearing how Wexford have shown 'potential' for the past few years, isnt it about time these lads stand up, break though and give performances we know they are capable of and if Kilkenny win then fair play!

I'd imagine their primary goal this year was promotion from division 1b.

They were fixed to play the 2 main challengers in the first 2 games so been prepared for those matches in the way that they were shouldn't surprise anyone.

Wexfords season has already been a success. Fair play to them - they had a plan and it was well executed

i agree with this, wexford have achieved their 2017 goal already. wouldnt loose too much sleep if they loose sunday. a good run in the qualifiers will round up a decent campaign for wexford. i only assume next years goal will be avoid relegation and to contest a leinster final?

WexGoal, never turn your back and leave 10 minutes early, players deserve better than that.

My goal for this year has already been met, now I want a decent performance on Sunday, beat the round robin qualifiers (all this talk about Kilkenny in the first round is infuriating) and then give Kilkenny one hell of a rattle in Wexford Park and maybe, just maybe, spring a surprise.

Then, we could have a decent qualifier run and who knows what after that. We still have some serious players to come back from injury later in the year, so we still have a chance of having a decent year.

The most important thing for the future of Wexford hurling was to get into 1A next year. Can't beat playing good quality 5 matches early next year. With all respect to the lower teams but what good is it to Wexford to be playing say Kerry, they need to be playing the big teams on regular bases.

Was the Laois Wexford game any good? Did Wexford take their foot off the pedal so to speak?

Delighted to see Wexford getting through yesterday - I've yet to see anything of the game but going to Kilkenny and winning by 5 points is impressive. I believe Eoin Murphy had a great game also which suggests it could have been more.

Good luck against Tipp - I think its fair to say you will be serious underdogs. I hope you put in a good performance, I'm sure you will

I was very impressed with Wexford last Sunday. Its no mean feat to beat Kilkenny in a knock out game in Nowlan.
I would give them a fighting chance against Tipp the next day.
All that said are they at 'full steam' already? They trained 26 days in January apparently and they seem fitter than any one else.

as an Offaly man I was delighted for Wexford Sunday with their win over Kilkenny...I always liked Wexford, they had some great teams down the years but unfortunately for them Kilkenny seemed to have a better one most of time and back in the 1980's if Wexford beat Kilkenny, Offaly always seemed to beat them then...hopefully Wexford will liven up Leinster this Summer...Dublin are kind of stuck in third gear, Offaly & Laois are well behind them so hopefully we will have a good championship...

That is a problem if true. The common trend with Davy over the past few years has been his team over-cooking before championship.

That being said, maybe the way his performance and that of Wexford is being measured this year means that promotion was the ultimate goal and anything else in the championship a bonus.

I remember when he first took over Clare, we flew out of the blocks in 2012 in the league, got promoted. Lost to Waterford in a close game in the first round of the championship and beat Dublin in Ennis. We then lost to Limerick in the next round. All and all and where we were coming from it was viewed as a positive season but it was noticeable that we did not improve after the league as much as other teams.

That was my one wish for Clare this year that we kept some in reserve for the championship and simply retained league status. The latter has been achieved and time will tell if the former will be.

Wexford are starting from a higher level than Clare in 2012 so I believe Davy and Wexford need to rattle a cage in the championship ,this year to really solidify true progress.

My fear for them is that beating KK now may go against them as the element of surprise is gone and KK will be chomping to meet the yellowbellies again.

All very intriguing to see how it pans out though.
