It is a white elephant at £72 million. They could have built a top quality stadium in Mid Ulster for £50 million, and still revamped Casement Park for £22 million.
Of course we should remember that It's not about having easy access for the fans of Ulsters 9 counties. No It's all about Belfast and giving it great facilities to showcase what a great City it is.

When starting from scratch, a stadium should be developed in a location that will suit all that will use it. This Casement Park stadium will be used for Ulster finals, Ulster semi finals and every other Ulster game that might draw a half decent crowd.

I started a thread last year on the viability of this stadium, and nobody really could give a good reason for having Ulster's top stadium in Belfast. We just had a huge amount of Antrim and Down fans in favor of it.

Huh??? What are you saying hillman, are rugby and soccer heads the only ones entitled to a seat at a game these days, I dont quite follow your logic.

No they are re-developing their own stadia. They got their cut too. Ravenhill was first to announce their plans not sure where Norn iron are at Windsor.

Would there be a problem if the new Casement was used for spill over Soccer or Rugby games? Money is money at the end of the day.

Most GAA grounds have terracing. A lot of people prefer to stand during games. The atmosphere in Clones is great, it woulnd't be the same if everyone was sitting down. It's a shame really that they've come to this decision. Should have at least one terrace behind the goal ala Hill 16.

no im saying becuase soccer matches terraces are prohibited and the aviva went down the all seater route to accomadate this so i was wondering is that the reason its going to be all seater and not have at least one terrace option for supporters which the gaa has always given its own supporters.

You are right to a certain extent Gary. It is a vast amount of money to spend on one stadium and I reckon there is politics at play here. Windsor and Ravenhill are getting millions and they are located in Belfast so the money allocated to Casement is more than likely to balance this out and to give Belfast a major 'Nationalist' stadium. I would also have concerns about the viability of it long term but that would have been the same if the stadium had been built in the middle of the countryside; in fact it probably would have been worse as there would be nothing other than 2 or 3 major GAA games a year being played there too. I think the GAA is banking on other attractions being lured to the new Casement with the added factor being Belfast with access to hotels etc. I mean what else could be attracted to a big stadium sitting in the middle of the Tyrone countryside or a redeveloped Clones other than GAA matches? Brend, I reckon most of the Tennents Super being consumed in Belfast is done so by loud culchie students in the Holyland; the same ones from Tyrone, Armagh, Fermanagh, Derry etc who shout and scream at 4 in the morning, who kick footballs off residents cars and who torture old age pensioners with their anti social behaviour. Let's face it Brend if it wasn't for Belfast most of ye would still be keeping pigs in your mud huts whereas because of Belfast ye all now have big whitewashed bungalows and 4 x 4's.

You're a funny guy UM, on the one hand you have all but admitted that this was a 'political' decision to upgrade Casement and not a decision based whats good for the GAA in all of 9 county Ulster, whom it is mean to serve, and now you insult the the very heart and soul of the provence by insisting that we all live in mud huts and tend pigs for a living. The last time I heard that insult levelled at someone it was aimed at poor African immigrants by ignorant Irish, glad to see your keeping up the tradition.

Are you for real brend? You were the one that started the insults by insinuating that EVERYONE in Belfast is on benefits and drinks Tennents Super so don't get all pious and falsely outraged friend! Yes I have my reservations about the amount of monet being spent on Casement and think it probably would have been better spreading the money about but I think the allocation of the funding by the Stormont Executive was for stand alone projects like Casement, Windsor and Ravenhill. Consequently Casement is getting all the money but I also believe that a big, white elephant in Belfast is still far better than a big, white elephant somewhere outside Coalisland or Dungannon.

Ulsterman is no-one or thing safe from this scattergun approach? It's getting worse genuinely.
I'll given you the Holylands piece their behaviour is disgraceful and they should be kicked out. The mudhuts bit is a bit Seawright/Campbellesque....there aren't too many Belfast nationalists who can go back too far without finding country cousins. Belfast was certainly not a city for a "mixed" city until fairly recently.
My Belfast local friends refer to the GAA as "Bogball" clearly you share their views.

Why would you build a new GAA complex away out of sight in mid ulster? Ceasement pk will be hosting some of the GAA's major fixtures and really there is nowhere much better to show case than in Belfast! I would love to see the city decked in colour on an ulster final day not stuck in some small town like omagh. Really, If your finding it hard to travel to belfast from anywhere in Ireland you would be better sitting at home with rte2 on.

I can't believe they aren't putting a terrace behind at least one of the goals. It's only 3,000 bigger than clones. A terrace could have brought it up to 45,000.

There will be big ulster finals in future that could have done with the extra capacity a terrace gives and a lot of people prefer it.

It should be used for all ireland quarter finals involving 2 ulster teams. It sold out would be much better than 30,000 from 2 ulster counties going to croker.
