Promoting the Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The Ch'ship is only four days away from beginning yet there is little or nothing being done to promote the games. The GAA seem to have just ignored it, and havent even bothered to put out any ad's on TV to promote it. The only promotion of the ch'ship beginning has been the ad for the Sunday game, amd that in itself is extremely poor.

I agree PK57. Did Padraig Duffy not say some time ago that there would be a launch for the championship. Nothing but a damp squib so far.

they dont promote the championship until the all ireland quarter finals unfortunatly.
they had said that they were going to undertake their biggest ever marketing and promotions campaign this year but must be going to happen for provincial finals only

Top marks go to the westmeath paper. The westmeath examiner. Main headline reads "let's get behind the maroon". Also the editorial is of the same subject. Think it is a bit like the rossie day thing. I believe it is a great idea. I hope meath and other counties do the same. It will not come from hq as to be honest there pr attempts are often ham fisted. Let each county promote there own. At this time of year every county has the hope that this is there year. Gaa seems to only bother when there is 4 counties left while 28 don't really have any more than passing interest. Get the finger out. Promote the greatest games rather than having rugby and soccer dominate everything

In fairness, there are one or two adds floating about but it has been generally low key

The promoting and advertising of the Championship relys on the media that carries it.

I.E the papers, radio and TV. But the papers and RTE and so on arent going to blow their budget on advertising something that they have every year, over the Euros and Olympics which will have their full attention and focus.

RTE aint going to spent a cent more than they reaaly feel they need to for the Championship this summer, its all gonna go on glitzy adds for the Euro's and trying to get us interested in some random event in the Olympics which theyve spent a fortune on buying the rights for.

last time i saw a concerted effort on RTE's part to actively advertise GAA games live on tele was 1991!!
You will always get the odd 10 second ad twice a week etc for The Sunday Game Live etc but in general I think RTE's attitude is "it will look after itself"...
This summer they would want to up their game alright
We are facing into a summer of GAA being 3rd on the list of sporting priorities in Ireland and in some places (limerick city for example) being 4th behind the Rugby tour of NZ

I agree that RTE will make a poor effort in promotion but will spin the Euros a lot more.I dont think a few fellows going on hols to New Zealand will have much of an effect.

You could have the Dallas Cheerleaders at halftime for Limerick and Waterford and you still wouldn't see a crowd

RKF that may be true in certain parts of the country, but take my word for it, the Rugby tour to NZ will be of far greater interest to the general population of Limerick city than the Limerick football or hurling teams in the championship
I do realise that many of you simply cannot fathom this and as someone not raised in Limerick, I can completely understand that, but trust me, its the truth

Definately not the usual big build up and intense interest in Ulster this year, in fact it's more of a whimper. That could be down to the poor county standard in the province at the minute, the general malaise about the country or the Euros and Olympics coming up. I know some Antrim clubs are struggling to fill buses and sell tickets for the Monaghan game on the 27th. In years gone by even though Antrim were no great shakes they always took a decent support to Championship matches.

There was a big launch for the Ulster Championship and it got massive coverage around the province

laflour,

I am talking more about the fans and club members. Usually you would hear club people, players and kids say "Can't wait for the start of the Championship this year". I haven't heard any of that.

The overall promotion of the Championship has been poor thus far which is par for the course at this stage. You have some strong counties making their first Championship appearance of the year this weekend but you would barely know if you were to rely on the national media for updates. The national media are content to let the GAA simmer away in the background until later in the summer and ramp up the coverage from July to mid-September.

There are some signs of progress from the various councils or county boards. The Munster Council had a Championship launch the other day in Mallow with updates on Facebook and Twitter and so forth. Probably not enough on its own but at least some form of recognition that you need to get the product out there in the minds of people.

a few hundred mobile billboards should be out along the roads promoting games.
along with temporary signs advertising specific matches in the counties competing.

that and billboards around the country should have promo posters for the championship. those billboard companies are crying out for business.
The GAA have to become far more visible - they are competing for paying customers!

give promotional posters into every school in the country. get county players in talking to the kids. get the kids wanting to go to games and the parents will bring them.

have fun activities for kids at all the grounds - inflatable pitches, skills games, bouncing castles, whatever.
have half time draws for jersies, hurleys, footballs, gloves or whatever.

Nice ideass(and this from someone whos involved in marketing) but many are not feasible.
Inflatable pitches are unfeasible. Where would you put them?
Grand to say get county players into schools but how many players can take time off work to do that. Its fine in the months of may/june for 3rd level students who are finished exams to do it but when else can they do it?
Who would you have manning these temporary billboards, who would cover the costs of running these trucks/paying wages etc

Sponsors Ormand, Bank of Ireland have adverts in the irish times saying support the boys in blue, next leinst match vs xxxx on this sunday etc. The GAA should be getting sponsors and counties likewise that wilol spend money advertising the games.

check out the advertising rates during the various events, that is usually a fair indicator of the viewing figures
