Replying To MuckrossHead:  "Full round of league games here this weekend with county players in action.

The only games where county players don't take part are league games, known as star games, the week before the county team plays in the championship."
The Gweedore Glenties game has been cancelled due to involvement of U21 County players. The first weekend and already it has started.

Replying To Greengrass:  "There are subsidiary competitions being played at the moment in Louth. The county board in their wisdom saw fit to fix a round of league games for the week before the fifth round of the NFL . This was a ridiculous decision for a number of reasons . Firstly the fifth round of the NFL is pivotal . No team is either relegated or promoted and every team has something to play for . After the fifth game things become a lot clearer in the NFL. Secondly the Louth County Board wanted to fix this round of league games in isolation and not play another round of league fixtures for another month . The leagues in Louth are single round leagues. Teams only play 11 games . In Armagh and Monaghan the leagues are double round leagues . Monaghan clubs play 18 league games and Armagh clubs play 14 league games. . The leagues in Armagh and Monaghan start the week after the NFL finishes . The games are then played week in week out . The Louth County Board's decision to schedule this round of club league fixtures was crazy . They should have scheduled subsidiary league fixtures for this weekend . The subsidiary competitions should be played to a conclusion and the league should be started on the weekend after the NFL is over for Louth . DundalkGael, I read your post on the Louth forum and I have great sympathy for you . I also have sympathy for Colin Kelly . The Louth County Board are the ones responsible for this mess ."
18 league games in Monaghan. WOW. Only 11 in mayo. Some difference!! Ours still goes on until November !!

Think Gweedore have about 7 u21's involved in the squad for Wednesday night against Tyrone. But similar to what the Louth poster said, the date of this fixture has been set in stone for months. The county board definitely knew there would be a good few Gweedore lads involved. Sometimes the lack of foresight within the GAA is mind boggling.

If county players cared about their clubs they should just withdraw from the county teams and play for their clubs until its sorted . We cant have the situation where relegation / promotion is affected by unavailability of clubs main players .

This happens every year and if you ask me its getting worse by the year. In monaghan, there is only 4 'star' games (games in which county players cant play a year) so when these 4 games are used up if the county is still going there might not be a club game played for months on end. In 2015, after Monaghan won Ulster there was still Senior league games being played at the start of December. God forbid if we ever got to an All-Ireland final (Luckily, we probably never will).

Club football has taken a back seat in the GAA in the last few years but now it seems its hanging on to the towbar. In my opinion, its inevitable before there is a split in the GAA and eventually there will be semi-pro inter county players who only play county football and then chums like us, the amateurs who keep the whole thing ticking over but the GAA are too money-crazed to realize that.

I think Gweedore threatened to withdraw all their players from the county if the game was not cancelled.

League in Cavan was supposed to start tomorrow but postponed until 8th April because of the fiasco in Omagh meaning cavan play the rescheduled match tomorrow night.
But it's only the clubs they're messing around so it's not important !!! ( I hope the sarcasm comes across in this sentence)

majority of club games in Westmeath in football and hurling have been cancelled over the last three weekends
no point fixing club games for this time of year unless a club has a very good pitch or there is a 3G pitch to play off games

The fact that League games were run off in December in Monaghan is another example of county boards being at fault in not efficiently running their competitions and nothing to do with Monaghan's participation in the Championship. My own County have been involved in playing football in August for a good number of years and yet still manage to have the League final played by the second week in August. I have often been critical of the Kildare County Board but in relation to the League fixtures they must get credit where credit is due. The fixtures are set out beforehand with allocated weekends free such as Easter and the June and August Bank Holiday weekends.
