Super8 - the end of intercounty football?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

sick of people whinging about elitism. nothing wrong with elitism, that is what the county game is i.e. a step up from club. the problem is the lack of professionalism b a lot of county boards holding back their team. and by county boards by extension i mean clubs.

the only problem with the Super 8 is it only fixes the end of the championship, if something similar could be done at the start of the championship all teams could get games and chances to develop.

the number of county games is not the problem for clubs, it is the amount of time that the few county games are played are spread over hence keeping county players unavailable to clubs. Once championship starts teams should be out every week weather it is super 8 or not. This year Sligo play 7th May in Connacht and Galway dont play until June 11! Crazy.

Wrap the Championship into a reasonable tight timeframe but make it intense. Lots of games, would be great excitement. It would also address the training/games ratio that players hate. I would imagine it would also cut back on expense. Clubs would have a predefined club window.

Probably would need to get rid of provincial championships to do it right, but if they must stay i'm sure they can find a work around.

3 very smart practical men leading GAA, GPA & CPA (Duffy, Earley & Griffin). if they dont solve this no one will. they will probably need to crack the whip with the provincial councils. Ulster were a disgrace last year...............................taking how long to play a few games!

rant over....

It'd be say to add a group stage at the start and keep the Provincial championships and get rid of the qualifiers.

8 groups of 4 to get down to 12 teams.

Top from each group qualify and 2nd place teams play off for 4 remaining places.

Play Provincial championships if a Provincial winner is one of the 12 teams advancing from the group stage they go straight into the super 8s.

The other teams who advanced from the group stage and any Provincial champions who didn't playoff for the remaining Super 8 spots.

Provincial championships go back to being do or die and remain part of the All Ireland series. Every team gets a minimum of 4 matches. Provincial imbalances are reduced by running the group stage on a National basis.

Par Spillane knows that the Super 8 will be a much tougher route that those AI's in the 1970's, but it unfair on Ulster teams because they have the Super 9 to deal with also.

This might be a stupid question, but can I get one thing straight about the Super 8:

Take next year's Group 1: It says it will be Munster/Connacht Winners, Leinster/Ulster runners up or who-ever beats them.

So for arguments sake it's Kerry, Mayo, Kildare and Monaghan.

Now is it a case that Kerry will play say Kildare at home, Monaghan away and Mayo in Croke Park and then if Kerry emerge as top, do they play the runner up team in Group 2?

I'm asking because the last night on Radio Kerry they were under the impression you played 3 games against all 3 teams in your group!

Also does anyone know how will it be determined who you play at home, away and in Croker? Is it a random draw or will there be some kind of seeding?

This is heading towards what the GAA and RTE etc are really looking for. They have always wanted more games with the top 4 playing off against each other. An American best of 7 system would suit them down to the ground as all they want is Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and Donegal or Tyrone playing in July and August. That is what fills Croke Park and gets the big TV audiences.
All the other teams are just an inconvenience.

basically not good for football as you are guaranteed to have Dublin, Mayo, Kerry, Donegal, Tyrone and 3 others from Cork, Galway, Derry, Fermanagh, Kildare and one or 2 others there every year
