Since you bring them up you might acknowledge your average rugger club they do a huge amount of charitable work for their community."

Replying To rcarragh:  "I have to say I agree with most of what you're saying.
It looks like the GAA are sleepwalking into this and I think it will damage the association. That said I'd say the GAA were put under a huge amount of pressure to be part of it.
Basically the IRFU are being disingenuous with this bid and will use this to attract players to their organisation. They and their media budies sell themselves as somehow a more important sport than anything the GAA can offer, with the wider offer of international representation, which in reality consists mainly of commonwealth nations, hardly a good international spread, or the British Lions whatever that is supposed to represent.
Basically they'd like to would like to take over the GAA, facilities and players both.

You can see by the replies you've got that you are right to be worried. People either aren't prepared to acknowledge what's happening, don't really understand what's happening. or are basically west brits (usual suspects: Limerick, Meath etc.) and are glad it's happening.

How to counteract it though is more difficult. Poor leadership at the top and an unwillingness to really stand up for the organisation are part of the problem. With the likes of Jarlath Burns encouraging the removal of the national flag and anthem at games it looks like the organisation is heading in the wrong direction. Worrying times."
Worrying times for who ?

You seem to be talking about something that happened a good few years ago that has no relevance to the current situation. A bit like talking about the Galway football team when discussing the destination of Sam. Entirely irrelevant."
Ha ha ha! That "dig" completely missed me! I'm a hurling man...have only a very passing interest in Gaelic football (more than I have in rugby though). I have gone on record as saying that I think rugby with be the number one followed and supported sport in Ireland in 50 years time (actually I think it will take less than that -- possibly no more than 20) and I take no pleasure at all in saying that, so no need to shoot the messenger.

Im a bit puzzled about the true Gael comment?

What constitutes a true Gael? Can you only be a true Gael if your against Rugby? Are Rugby players and supporters not true Gaels?
Was Anthony Foley not a true Gael (RIP), Paul O Connel, Tadgh Furlong, Sean O Brien, Rory Best, Brian O driscoll, John Hayes are these not true Gaels.

Is it just Rugby or does it apply to other sports, are Roy Keane, Paul Mc Grath, Packie Bonner and Robbie Keane etc not true Gaels? Is Katie Taylor a true Gale or Conor Mc Gregor?

Was Michael Cusack a true Gael seeing as he had a love and support for Cricket and played with Blackrock Cricket Club etc?

Its funny but i see an awful lot of anti rugby comments from posters who extoll the virtues of our Gaelic games yet in certain counties said same posters wouldnt even be able to display the basic skills of the greatest of our native games in the form of hurling and actively ignore the game itself. Are they true Gaels?

First of all I agree with you wholeheartedly, although I do fall into the category of not knowing one end of a hurly from the other. I guess even though I coach underage level football, I have played football at a pretty decent level, hold a Meath season ticket for myself and all my kids, member of supporters group, buy every lotto ticket for around 3 different clubs, have moved around fair bit but still support former clubs. But I guess I'm not a true Gael.

I suspect ConcernedGael is a wum but, if not, don't worry my friend. If Ireland host the RWC, it will come and go. Ireland will exit at the quarter final stage, as usual, there will be some sort of row/scandal about hotel prices/dangerous tackles/drugs in sport and the GAA will come out the other end with upgraded facilities and a wad of cash all donated by the sheepskin coat and cigar brigade.

As for the media, they've been pushing the Leinster Schools Senior Cup as national news for 30 years or more. Everyone knows their biases, people turn the page to what they want to read. Our games are good enough to withstand the competition!

Im no wum. Just to counter a few arguements used by the usually propagandists to shoot my opinions down. A true gael is one who places our traditions above those of other cultures such as our former rulers Britain. Now that does not mean that people cannot follow foreign sports. I occasionally enjoy watching rugby and soccer. However, it is blatantly obvious that the rugby fraternity (particularly resonant here as the rugby crowd is still dominated by a small elite middle to upper class minority) are intent on supplanting our native games in favour of their sport. I have no doubt that Janesboro or other individuals have given service to the GAA. That does not change the fact that the GAA and our very culture as a nation is under threat from a pseudo British elite who wish to remove Gaa from its preeminent position. Come on lets unite and bring down this bid before it is too late.

Dunnes Stores normally have great offers on Turkey foil this time of year. It's usually stronger than the standard tin foil. My advice is stock up.

Opening up Croke park did not damage the CLG/GAA. Neither hopefully will the Rugby World cup.

I believe that it is crazy that the GAA would consider giving it's stadia and in the process a helping hand to a British sport who openly states it's intention to make itself top sport at the expense of our national pastimes. Is there anyone out there who knows of real actions we can take as individuals to damage this bid?"
get your celtic jersey washed and stand outside croke park with a 'no foreign sports' banner?

We can disagree again, I actually think Tesco foil is better.
All well in the world again. :)

Thats the problem encompassed in a microcosm. The fact that the majority have already been brainwashed about rugby by the media is evident judging by the contributions to this very forum. Its now abnormal to hold the view that our sports are deserving of preferential treatment. Eventually the few remaining protesters will be silenced either by time or by the avalanche of the rugby bandwagon. Also, isnt it strange that GAA fans have now adapted the rugby stance that wearing a soccer jersey makes you somehow a legitimate target for abuse due to the idea that you are somehow lower class! Im not a great fan of Glasgow celtic but i do know that the club has its origins in the vast pool of desperate emigrants that flooded into Glasgow after the potato famine. Fans of that club have and always will have a strong affinity with our country. Those who wear that jersey demonstrate an awareness of our own troubled history and should not be vilified for choosing to do so!!

Lies. If you actually look at the post that debated this issue you will see numerous posters highlighting problems with it. I had raised the issue of our club championship being affected by it.

Is Katie Taylor a true Gale

I dunno Tom, I'd say she's more of a whirlwind, or a hurricane, definitely stronger than a gale! :)
