Beaten by a Waterford club in the Munster SFC (and IFC v Limerick) and to me Glen Rovers were no match for Ballyea yesterday. Both county teams are doing bad by Cork standards at senior level. Underage is making no real impact. What is happening along the Lee? Are Cork going soft or is just one of those things that happen every so often? Whats the county board like down that way? Isn't there a member that has a talent for rubbing people up the wrong way?

Things are not great but we don't need to exaggerate either. We are not that bad underage. At under 14-17 level our teams are flying it - in terms of number of trophies won in the last 2/3 years, we are well ahead of the rest (I am not saying we are better than the rest). Our senior club teams have not won the championship in a few years but then again Clare teams had not won it in 16 years before yesterday. The Glen were super confident that they would win the game. They had beaten the Limerick champions in Limerick. Before that game, one would say that it was the toughest possible draw. The Limerick championship is as tough as it gets and the Glen won a tough game against them. They had every reason to believe they could win yesterday. As it transpired, they were beaten by a much better team on the day. That is what counts and fair play to an excellent Ballyea side. We have no complaints at all. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 21/11/2016 14:42:32 1935762 Link 1 |

I think Cork hurling fell into the trap of thinking that they'd just always have competitive teams and maybe haven't put the work in at underage level that happened in other counties. The old idea that a 'Cork team could get together overnight' and challenge for the All-Ireland next year was an idea believed by too many perhaps. They were a bit like Dublin in football in that regards MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13725 - 21/11/2016 15:21:37 1935774 Link 0 |
They won one game. They lost another to Tipp (the AI champions) by 8 points.

Were leading eventual All Ireland winners Tipp half way through second half until an excellent Tipp team finished very strongly.

They beat that Tipp team 12 months previous, no? keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 21/11/2016 15:54:39 1935779 Link 0 |
As Bennybunny says they are destroying all in front of them from 14 to 17 so don't worry about Cork they will be back. I'll stick my neck out and say they'll win an All Ireland before KK will win another! Get goods on that one! ;) tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 21/11/2016 16:19:50 1935784 Link 0 |
In minor or under 17? In 2015 we beat Limerick and then lost to Limerick..two games against the same county

theres no shame on carberry being beat by the waterford champions the nire whatsoever...in fact, and im not a betting man at all, id say the nire went into that as favourites. a very decent outfit to be fair...so i wouldnt say cork gaa is a shambles for that reason. juniorjudge (Waterford) - Posts: 383 - 21/11/2016 18:12:33 1935810 Link 0 |

That is what you get when you have a back door system with 5 teams. Look, the rules are the same for each county so we cannot complain it is unfair on us. However, it is unfair on all of us. There are only 5 teams. Can't we just play four games - 2 home and 2 away and top two teams in final. Each county gets to develop its players equally. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 21/11/2016 23:08:05 1935866 Link 1 |
Very good suggestion

An eminently sensible suggestion which could be played off over 2 months- will never get traction with the old men who run the GAA though - too much like soccer with their leagues - you need knockout, back doors, playoffs - anything but league in their eyes for a championship.

Fact is....only a select few teams are going to win anything this year. Rockies (Cork) - Posts: 947 - 23/11/2016 13:19:29 1936226 Link 0 |
