yes there is an element of playing the victim. But you must remember that the GAA is an amateur and voluntary organization. Whereas Rugby and Soccer (and US football) are professional. With large marketing and advertising budgets behind them. Examples Guinness and Bank of Ireland in Rugby and Skysports in Football. So what is wrong with volunteers speaking up about their game?

given this attitude I am not surprised that Mayo never win All Ireland. Anyway good luck to the Irish rugby team against Australia today.

You dont think the GAA employee the same professional marketing companies as IRFU and FAI etc ? The GAA is not purely a volunteer and amateur association. It is run by full time professionals and contract professional external companies. Sure there are volunteers at club level but this is the same as your local soccer, tennis, basketball clubs.. too

...so instead of constantly whining about 'the media' maybe talk to the professional marketing and promotions companies they pay large sums of money to..which actually could be going to support the voluteers in clubs

Go easy about the rain. I have been regularly to the Ennis Road Grounds for over fifty years and I could in one the number of times it rained heavily. However two of the worst drenching I ever SaaS were in Croke Park. One was on the day of two football quarter finals, Galway v Kerry and Wexford v Armagh and of course Limerick v Kilkenny in 2014.However the worst of all was Wexford Park in 2009. Limericks v Wexford, which the biggest wash out I ever saw. Oldtourman (Limerick) - Posts: 4340 - 26/11/2016 14:54:05 1936825 Link 0 |

Hands up who thinks that having no alcohol sponsorship for sports in Ireland will change the drink culture amongst our youth ? It's been around for generations. The 'gonna get locked tonight' thinking rather than ' going out to enjoy ourselves and have a few pints'. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7363 - 26/11/2016 16:43:46 1936836 Link 0 |
Rugby and soccer will enjoy moments in the spotlight. Gaelic Games are the natural sporting habitat. It's just the way it is. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7873 - 26/11/2016 16:49:00 1936838 Link 1 |
Soccer is a massive World wide Global business. Rugby is nearly. Both sports are World wide with massive sponsorship and advertising budgets. Billions in Soccer and Millions in Rugby. The GAA is neither of these. It is Ireland based. Compare say BP or Microsoft or Ford autos to say Kerrygold. GAA being Kerrygold. Football being Ford and Rugby being Heineken for example. They are on different levels completely. But still the smaller sports have merit. Slán agus beannacht go léir. Beidh bua ar an CLG.

Aussie Rules is the biggest sport in Australia and is not an International Game .GAA is the biggest sport in Ireland and always will be.

Gaelic Games being unique to Ireland and Irish people will always be popular here. You can go watch soccer or rugby almost anywhere in the world. That's why Irish soccer is never really going to take off. Rugby can draw a crowd because it has a smaller pool of competitive teams and we can reach the top relatively easily. Always is a very long time. Aussie Rules holds its own in Australia because it is a professional sport that provides players with a good living. Gaelic football and hurling can never become professional because our much smaller population makes it unfeasible. We live in a different age now. The lure of professional sports both for players and for spectators is compelling it would appear.

I'd like to congratulate a fellow Lucan residant of mine,Fergal O Brien,on his fantastic victory over Barry "The Hawk"Hawkins in yesterdays thriller in the UK Championship. In doing so,Fergal hit five centuries to win 6-5 and create a small bit of snooker history as it is a record for a best of 11 frame match. cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 27/11/2016 09:14:00 1936907 Link 2 |

Rugby is in a fortunate position; It's international, but in a very limited way (almost exclusively ex-British colonies, so while there is an international element, it's not hard to be among the best teams in the world. In contrast GAA is not international, + lacks the associated glamour, while soccer is truly international, which is why even to qualify for a world cup is a major achievement. Also rugby is a public school game, and public schoolboys dominate RTE and the media
