Clarke dropped for final but gets an all star ?

A team that went the whole season unbeaten only gets 6 players on the team?

Durkan of Mayo doesn't get an All Star now that's a joke, Durkan had a way better season than Keegan Boyle and Mchugh (all great players but Durkan was outstanding this year)

Dublin half back never troubled once all summer doesn't get one player on the team."
The only thing you fail to mention is that the mighty Dubs were lucky to win the final by a single point after 150 mins of football.

Good team overall. Durkan has to be in there, and is the only glaring omission. I think Tipp could have gotten a second representative given their remarkable championship, either Comerford for Clarke, or Acheson in place of Donnelly. No real complaints about the team though.

Anyone who thinks Ryan McHugh shouldn't have got one didn't see much of Donegal this year.

All star football awards
While i am disappointed that Cavans David Givney did not get an award I feel that the selectors did get it about right. Galway and Monaghan will surely feel hard done by"
David Givney didn't get a kick of a ball in either Tyrone game so I don't see how you can be disappointed. Why would Monaghan be disappointed?

True,

We had a couple of chances to extend the lead by another point or two towards the end of the replay but squandered possession too cheaply so we had to make do with just the point win.

Durkan was excellent in both games v Dublin and if he had been selected it would of been hard to argue with but he was quiet up until then and didn't have any strong performances of note bar the finals. In saying that, that has been enough to get an All Star on previous occasions but I think Keegan and McHugh were stronger over the whole season. Keegan is nominated for POTY and was always going to get 1 and I'll probably be accused of being biased here but I think Mchugh was one of the players of the year until Donegal lost to Dublin and was a standout performer in all of Donegal's 6 championship games and during the league campaign. He deserves his award.

How were the Dubs lucky to win? a One point loss flattered Mayo

Dublin lost no games in the league or championship.

Mayo lost 6 games.

Explain that halfback line?

I think it's pretty safe to say had McCarthy played every game he would of been a banker but because of injury and an unfortunate black card early in the first Mayo game he was overlooked. COS could easily got in ahead of Boyle. That was a toss up for me. John Small had a good year but didn't perform at the same levels as Keegan or McHugh. Dublin as a whole unit performed way better than any other team this year but that does not mean they had the best performing individuals in every position.

Overall I think it's the fairest selection in years.

Comerford could have got it but it's hard to begrudge Clarke - his absence in the replay showed his all-round worth to Mayo. Cluxton was never going to get one, kicking the ball 20yds to an unmarked man all year has been enough for him once or twice in the past but not this year.

Durkin is unlucky, yes, but Keegan was always getting one, Boyle was Mayo's best player when the chips were down against Galway, Westmeath and Kildare. O'Sullivan was at fault for the Donegal goal and was way off the pace in the final replay.

Donnelly probably the luckiest of all recipients but there would have been an argument made against Brennan or Acheson had either got one.

The forwards are spot on - McMenamin is unlucky but when it really mattered, he didn't cut the mustard.

Our backs were very good in final and replay and that's what sticks in the mind for many of those choosing the team. Rarely reflects how players have performed all year.

Were Paddy Durcan and Brendan Harisson too old to be nominated for Young Player of the year?

If cian o'sullivan got an all star it would be a joke. Thank god he didn't. He marks nobody. He was pretty average in both finals. He had nobody to mark against Donegal an still managed to set up a goal for Donegal. Ryan McHugh was exceptional in every game for Donegal even when they struggled against teams. Lee Keegan POTY and Colm Boyle was outstanding all year also. His defending and tackling was outstanding all year. Those 3 were easily the best half backs in the country this year.

All Star team is fair IMO.

How is it baffling? Boyle was the best CB in the Country this year and deserves the award. O'Sullivan is a brilliant footballer and has been one of Dublin's most important players in recent times but he was not at his best this year. A few people have mentioned his omission now but I don't see it as an issue at all.

JayP, I don't pick the team, nor do I have a clue how they pick it ! I'd have Durcan in before Boyle.

Fitzsimons was Man of the Match for the replay but Costello and McAuley's introduction were very influential on the result so would either of them not be in with a shout for Man of the Match?
