Football Championship 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think we could win th allireland if joe mcquillan David gough and David coldrick retired.
Only joking , I had penciled in 2017 to be our breakthrough year a few years back but having watched our county championship quarterfinals I'd have to say there isn't any1 putting their hands up really for selection bar 1/2 .
I hope we get knocked out early in Munster as we seriously need games.
It's pointless looking past the dubs for 2017 as they're the Kilkenny of football (if Kilkenny had every advantage under the sun) :-)

Replying To redbomb:  "not sure where you are putting Kerry in this seen nothing this year to show they are any were close to another AI they played 1 team outside of Munster this summer all be it Dublin and after the league final they had a big point to prove and they couldn't do it they are carrying to many old men with big mileage in the legs. IMO 2017 AI is between Dublin Mayo and Tyrone with Kerry maybe there or there about as usual"
The were a point down towards the end against dublin the should have gotten a free to level the match who knows what would have happened then, they would have been favourites going into the final. It a long time since anyone other than dublin bet them in the championship. If the have a fully fit jod and can bring some players through from their 3 in a row minor team it would be hard to argue the dont have a chance.

Tryone don't have a good record once the get to a quarter final the only team the have best in years is monaghan and I don't believe the have good enough forwards to win Sam. I don't think the showed enough this year to make them geniune contenders

Boost for Cork with Aidan Walsh focusing on the football. Damien Cahalane would also improve them if he goes back to the football.

Nothing between Mayo , Donegal and Tryone as evident by their meetings this year .

Tyrone lost as narrow as it comes V Mayo and Tyrone beat Donegal in the 74th minute . Mayo got a nice route through .

Kerry played nobody until the semi final so the jury is still out on them although they still have some excellent players.

Dublin are the best . Very little separates Mayo , Donegal , Tyrone and Kerry .

If our own manager wasn't so negative and stubborn I'd give us a decent shout next year .

Dublin Mayo and Kerry. Everyone else is an ocean behind.

Jim McG was Donegals trump card. They haven't beaten any one decent in champ since he left bar Tyrone early in Ulster last year when they were just relegated.

If Mayo don't have the scoring forwards at least they have a free taker which is much more than can be said for Tyrone!

Tipp will do well to get to another All Ireland semi and if they were to do that, that is still massive progress for them,

Monaghan and Cork have decent teams but at this stage both should consider provincial honours as the limits of their capabilities.

Galway Roscommon Cavan all have good young teams coming through but there is no evidence that they are ready to take out a Kerry Mayo or Dublin in August in Croker.

Counties like Meath Kildare Derry Armagh and Down are so flaky that they can't even expect to make an impact at provincial level unless they seriously buck up their notions over the winter.

Would fancy ourselves for a semi final through the front door next year if we get our house in order and stop playing with fear.

Mayo may have had an easy passage but the had the Ref decisions in their first match in Castlebar otherwise they may have been beaten. Even though they are a very good side there is no guarantee that they will make it out of Connacht next year with Galway and Roscommon to contend with. The backdoor can be a slippery route. Whether Rochford gains anything from his mistakes is any ones guess- he still does not appear to recognise his goalkeeper mistake which gives little confidence.

Delighted we have not been mentioned by anyone. It will help us come in under radar, however that may change when we get promotion. We won't beat dubs this year (unfortunately) but we will give them one hell of a freight. Funny thing is i was talking to inlaws to offer them slightly begrudgingly congratulations, and they were telling me a few dub players were saying next they will have to contend with Meath renewed in Leinster and perhaps futher down line too.
I would say we will be nailed on certainty to reach quarters. I think we have the best equipped management team to get the very best out of a decent set of players, and with the return of the players who walked away we will give any team a good rattle, I cannot wait. I would say barring dubs mayo and Kerry we would match any other county on our day.
Roll on 2017. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we are coming back.

What are you smoking? Meath haven't a hope in hell same as ourselves. Not one top class player in meath and that's a fact. Nothing coming through at underage.

Rory might listen a wee bit more to Martin Beag and get us transitioning better from defence to attack like Kilcar are,
Plenty of emerging talent in Donegal if it can be harnessed and used correctly. It remains to be seen if it will however.

Replying To Cbar:  "if Mayo win Connacht and Dublin win Leinster - are the 2 teams not kept apart until the final?? I thought it was Connacht to play Munster and Leinster v Ulster in 2017?

So my predictions for SF's are:
Mayo v Kerry
Dublin v Tyrone

Of those 4 teams, I'd be confident Dublin and Kerry will make it. Tyrone, because of the Ulster championship is the most unpredictable and Mayo... well I'd still put them favourite for Connacht but who knows - feeling more than a bit down here!

What is the mood like in the other Munster counties? Do Clare / Tipp have realistic chances of a breakthrough? What about Cork? Can they regroup?"
I think it takes a sustained effort over a few years to win an AI. So I would agree with you. It's between those 4 counties with Donegal as the only other contender.

Dublin v Tyrone
Mayo v Kerry

I find it hard to fancy Dublin right now after the difficulties we have had in the last 4 matches. But I do think it's about being hard to beat and the Dubs are the hardest to beat right now.

Mayo are second best and I know it's hard to be optimistic so soon after Saturday but there is no reason to write them off. Can they defend a lead though? We don't know because they hardly led Dublin at any stage in 2 matches. They very wobbly when 1 point up to Tyrone.

Kerry are right there getting nasty hungry. They produced a massive 70 mins in the semi final. Remarkable having not had a match worth talking about since the previous All Ireland Final.

I fancy Mayo over Kerry, just. Their leaders are younger and they owe Kerry for 2014.

Tyrone are close. They would relish an underdogs run at Dublin. If the Dubs don't improve Tyrone could take them but they need a few players to step up (Ronan O Neill for a start). There is a lot to discuss about Tyrone. For all their under age success they are a ways off the raw talent they had in the noughties. That can change and they are due a final appearance.

Mayo and Tyrone to lock horns in 2017.
I would give both sides a 50/50 chance.

All the best to Meath

Having them slightly more competitive will make hammering them all the sweeter

A very good season for Meath would be to get promoted and to not lose to any team other than Dublin, Tyrone, Donegal, Mayo or Kerry in the championship.

A loss to the likes of a Cork, Galway or Monaghan wouldn't be terrible.

Losing to any Leinster team bar Dublin would represent a lack of progress.

Whilst McEntee looks like a great appointment there are a lot of top managers out there. I hope he is given time to work things through. He is far from being a favourite of the current county board.
