All Stars for 2016

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The best forward in the country in my opinion is Conor McManus.
Unfortunately the All Stars are based on teams which progress to the latter stages of the championship, which in fairness gives players a chance to shine and get noticed.
Mc Manus would get his place on any team. Even when he's scoring against us you can only admire his talent.

"The GAA GPA Opel All-Star team will be selected next month by a panel of national Gaelic Games Correspondents. The Players of the Year awards will be voted upon by the players themselves."

Has the player of the year being always voted by the players rather than the journos??

100% agree, he's the best forward in Ireland. .he's carried Monaghan to 2 Ulster titles

But I don't think he was at his best this year - some outstanding points v Donegal really showed his class but I felt they curtailed him very well in the 2nd game.

Do people honestly think Cian O'Sullivan had a good year? Thought he was fairly average and looked in trouble any time he was ran at. Colm Boyle would have been the standout centre half imo.

Cluxton still the best keeper in the country and by a country mile. Anyone who doubts that doesn't appreciate the contribution he makes.

Why was Jonny Cooper not nominated for poty? Would have had him ahead of Fenton and Kilkenny.

As far as I can remember it was always the media up until about 4/5 years ago.

It definitely wasn't the players in 2010 when Bernard won it and not sure it was for Alan in 2011, but I think it was the players in 2012 when Lacey won it - so my guess is it changed in 2012.

Politics comes into the nominations. I am not sure (correct me if I am wrong) but do the all stars only apply to championship form of players?

Big disappointments will happen especially if players are switched out of position to get an all star. I can see counties expecting a quota of players to get their representation at the expense of a player more deserving of an all star. This happens every single year.

Based on the nominations:

1. Cluxton - to increase Dublin's tally because any of the 3 could get selected
2. McMahon
3. Cooper
4. Harrison
5. Keegan
6. Boyle
7. McHugh - may go with Durcan to give Mayo a 4th
8. Fenton POTY
9. Acheson - wouldn't be surprised if Brennan or Donnelly get picked here
10. Harte - feel he's been nominated as a forward for a reason
11. Connolly
12. Kilkenny
13. Geaney
14. Quinlivan
15. Rock

Don't know how Kilkenny got nominated for POTY I wouldn't even give him an All star.
Johnny Cooper not nominated is a joke as he deserved to win it.
Diarmuid O'Connor nominated is very surprising he was poor all year except for a decent game against a poor Kildare side. Injuries stopped him reaching last years levels. Aidan O'Shea getting a nomination is a joke

To be honest, these days only the full back and full forward lines are rigid. Anyone else in the middle 8 is interchangeable because they all attack as a unit and defend as a unit. And there isn't much high fielding to differenciate the 2 midfielders from the rest. You couldn't really see someone like Matty Donnelly getting an all-star in midfield 20 years ago. Nowadays, rather than a good high fielder, it is more important that a midfielder can go 'box-to-box', be a link between defense and attack, reads the game well, and provide a scoring threat from deep. Mobility is far more important now than in decades past.

The whole all star thing is a joke....Michael Darragh McCauley has an all star player of the year and gooch hasn't......that in itself is reason enough to scrap the whole thing

No one even knows where Aidan O'Shea best position is and its 2016 so I dont think he is all star material
He tends to run out of steam after about 40 minute mark too

Cluxton outstanding all year except one bad kick Clarke was drop for Galway game and all Ireland replay hardly all star form if your own manager doesn't think your good enough to start."
So how may would you like Dublin to get, all 15??

Thanks if that's the case then Keegan has a good chance. PP had him at 25/1 and DC (who isn't even nominated) at 20/1 this morning at about 10:00... taken down now.. must have been a mistake on their behalf...

Sure give all 15 to the Dublin team.

Fierce "dedicated" bunch of lads.

I wouldn't disagree with that at all, Kilkenny is a product of the bizarre application of stats by the media, 50+ possessions seems to be more important than actually doing anything with them, the praise he had in the QF against Donegal was daft, as anytime he got the ball he ran across the pitch or towards his own goal, same in subsequent games. I think hes a good footballer but the nomination for player of the year is a bit of a joke, in the Dublin team Fenton,Cooper and McManamon were better than him but he's one of the medias chosen ones so he has had the nod. Fenton will probably get it consistently good all year.

Redbomb whatever the record number of all stars for one county is on a team we should be getting equal of that at least.

Two seems a bit scant for Mayo a Team that lost an All Ireland replay by a point and played 9 championship matches with some fine displays consistently at the back
