Possible all stars 2016?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

David Clarke (M)/Evan Comerford (T)

Johnny Cooper (D), Keith Higgins (M), Philly McMahon (D), Shane Enright and Cathal McCaron to miss out and feel aggrieved.
Paul Murphy (K), Cian OSullivan (D), Lee Keegan (M), James McCarthy and Peter Harte to miss out

Brian Fenton (D), Gary Brennan (Cl) OShea or Moran to potentially snatch one in place of Brennan

Ciaran Kilkenny (D), Diarmuid Connolly (D), Aidan Oshea (M) Ryan Mchugh and Diarmuid OConnor to miss out
Michael Quinlivan (T), Kevin McMeniman (D), Paul Geaney (K), Dean Rock and Cillian OConnor subject to how the final go

This is the way the bookies see it. I can see Gary Brennan of Clare losing out, when Aidan Oshea is possibly switched to mid field to allow Oconnor or McHugh in for a half forward award.

This is possibly the first year in decades (how long)? that ulster will not get represented.
Potentially no representation for connaught or ulster champions.

Surprised Gary Brennan has not got a mention. Other than Fenton none of the top teams midfielders have been at their best but Brennan was exceptional in a good season for Clare.

Colm Cavanagh has been excellent for Tyrone all season in the sweeper position but does the All-Stars reflect these changing times when most teams do not line out 1-15.

The fact that no Ulster team made it passed the QF stage you couldn't really argue if none were selected. If they do get one it will probably come down between Peter Harte and Ryan McHugh as they were 2 contenders for the POTY award up until their exit from the championship. Can't see any Galway players getting selected. Tipp deserve a couple and I also think Gary Brennan is a shoe in. Kerry will also get 1 or 2 and the remainder will come from Dublin and Mayo.

I can't see Brennan ending up with an All Star and it would be a travesty if either McHugh or Harte missed out, I don't think any halfback has come close to their consistent levels of performances this summer. Even if a few of the Dublin/Mayo halfbacks had great games they've still not done enough to get ahead of either of McHugh and Harte.

McHugh or Harte could easily miss out, not on their own merit, but on the performance of Donegal and Tyrone this year, (quarter final exits). While I dont necessarily agree with this, I do feel that this is a results based reward system.

Boyle and Keegan will probably take 2 of the half back positions unless they get shown up in the final. You're talking Harte, McHugh, O'Sullivan for the last spot.

Its very hard to win an all star without making a semi-final. If either of McHugh or Harte do it, it's because of just how good they were in the games they did play.

Kilkenney will get one in the half backs. There's a bit of squeezing to be done to get 6 forwards in without adding him to the mix

Who do you see getting in out of the forwards?

I'd have Kilkenny, McManamon, Geaney as the shoo ins.

You're talking Rock, Moran, A O'Shea, Quinlivin, Connolly being in a battle for the other spots.

Kilkenny to half back would be a big call, he only played there one game. I know the panel run a bit fast and loose with positions but they don't usually throw clear forwards into defence.

I listed my teams above. If Dublin do go on to win Sam, then they'll likely get Kev Mac, Connolly and Rock. Geaney is a shoe-in. I think Quinliven would be very very unlucky to miss out. that leaves one more spot and I think Mayo will get at least 1 through DOC, COC, AOS or Andy Moran.

It will make it much easier for the panel to dismiss Harte or McHugh than any of the above given where their teams exited the championship.

(That doesn't mean for a second that I agree with it)

I still think Peter Harte will get one as Tyrone will be guaranteed at least one an all-star having won Ulster. Harte is a great player and one of the best players in the country. Ryan McHugh could struggle alright as Donegal didn't do well in the championship. He was absolutely outstanding this year.

If it was picked today:

Comerford
Cooper, Griffen , McDonald
Keegan, Boyle, o Sullivan
Fenton, Donnelly
Connolly, o Sullivan, Harte
Moran, O Shea, McMenamin

That's 5 Dublin, 4 mayo, 2 Kerry, 2 tipp, 2 Tyrone

If mayo win Sam take our comerford and Clarke for D o Connor and D Clarke

If Dublin win insert Kilkenny and Cluxton
