The importance again of Division 1 football

And of course the other way of looking at it is, most teams that do well in the championship usually end up in Div 1, chicken & egg etc.

It didn't but the difference between Division 1 and 3 was evident at times last Sunday."
Mayo are just better than Tipp.

That is why they beat them, that is why they are in division 1 and able to maintain their place in it despite not giving a jot about it.

People mix up correlation and causation all the time. Being in division 1 and doing well in Championship are undoubtably correlated, but you can't necessarily say that being in division 1 causes teams to be better in championship. There probably is some advantage to playing better teams but I think it's often over played. The league is a clear secondary competition. most teams use the league to blood new players and test them before throwing them into championship. It's played in very different conditions to championship at a time of year when teams are only beginning to prepare for the season ahead. There's months between the end of a team's league campaign and the time when the business end of their championship kicks in.

Prioritising league over championship would just be stupid. At the end of the day championship is the be and end all. Nobody's talking about Kevin McStay and Fergal O'Donnell as managers of the year after finishing 6th in division 1, but Liam Kearns is many people's manager of the year despite not even being able to take Tipp out of division 3.

Fair enough but no ones talking about kevin walsh or Tom Cribbin as managers of the year either, and the former even won a championship trophy.
Most managers arent remembered at the end of the year, whether for their league or championship exploits.
Im sure that both Clare and Tipp will need to move up a division or two over the next few years if they are to keep on an upward curve.

Yep I totally agree with you on this. Meath and Kildare underage are at a all time high, now we all know underage success doesn't guarantee senior, but its a good base . Also I believe Meath choice in new management is a long term appointment who has proven track record. Now obviously we need to get back to div 1 asap which will be Andy main priority.
But I do think over the next 8 years Meath Kildare and Dublin will be the main contenders.

I hope Kildare and Meath become competitive again with Dublin. It'd make for a much better Leinster championship.

It's a bold prediction though to say that they'll be Dublin's biggest challengers in a few short years as Kingoreilly stated.

The time frame is unrealistic for both teams.

To rule out the likes of Tyrone, Kerry and Mayo who've had much more underage success than Meath or Kildare is a bit strange also.

I dont think it'll be that soon, and I posted a reply but it didn't show up, saying Kerry have a superb minor team and I feel they will be a force again. I expect Meath to be in last 4 over Andy initial tenure (3 years) I also expect us to be in div 1 by then (dont think it'll be next year but definitely year after if not).
This is a man who brought alot of current Meath seniors to all ire minor final, add to that what he did with st endas was unbelievable. Probably one of the top managers in the game at moment so the future looks bright, alot of Meath players haven't achieved their potential yet, Andy will ensure they do.

Meath underage at a all time high? 16 years without Leinster u 21 and 10 years without a minor Leinster. Anyways given the advantages both kildare and Meath have you would imagine the will improve at senior level.
