Dublin v Donegal

poguemahone, first off, Peader Andrews!!! That's a shocking slip there mate.

But in regards to the points you make, you're right about how the other teams deal with their own kickouts and how their FB line works when pressed on. If you go back to the All Ireland final last year, there was a lot of talk about how Kerry would deal with Cluxton's kick outs. But as it turned out, Kerry struggled more with their own kickouts on the day. Dublin's midfield and front players did serious damage to Kerry from their kickout with Fenton and Connolly winning a lot of balls there while Dublin broke even for the most part from their own kick out.
Donegal are a different animal though. They'll probably let Dublin have their own kickout and will compete for any 50/50's put into the midfield. I expect Dublin to push up on the Donegal kickout but I'd still expect Donegal to retain enough from this regardless. Maybe Dublin have the patience to break down mass defences but that patience would ebb away if they were chasing a lead.

JayP, you're spot on there. There are a lot of 'if's' in my assessment of how things 'might' go but it was very much the same in 2014, a lot of if's just went Donegal's way. According to McGuinness it was all part of his master plan though!!

On paper I think Dublin should win, they're the best team in the country when in full flow. I think if they get an early goal it could be a bad day at the office for Donegal. But, it's these kind of matches when I think Dublin are vulnerable and you just don't know how they'll react if the bounce of the ball goes against them.

Sure we all know the 4 Regions aren't any better than '05 to '09. Mayo And Donegal's inability so far to offer much of a challenge is surprising. Mayo don't have the qualities of old Galway teams. Donegal haven't had the quality of old Tyrone teams.

Tyrone might be on the way back. Mickey Harte might have a team capable of back-to-back titles if they get near the levels of '03 to '09 as there's noone else on or near that level."
You can't genuinely believe that the Dublin team from 05-09 were as good as this current team?

Wow that's a stupid statement even for this website! How many players from then would get into this team? With the exception of the players that span both teams, Ciarán Whelan maybe, although as every country poster told us at the time he was massiely over rated.

Also why do you only refer to Dublin as a region? Why not include other counties that are broken into different civil administrations?

Because MesAmi.......thats his thing. He thinks the "Dublin Region", now 4 Regions thing is funny. He thinks he sounds cool. He thinks hes getting under our skin.

And he is. Well done Legendz..... you have the measure of us Dubs! Good man.

Dublin are less vulnerable to a ball going against them than any other team out there just now. Maybe going back to the past but not this current squad. In trouble in 2013 v Kerry and even more so last year in the Mayo replay but they held it together to turn those big games around. You have to respect that Donegal are a tough game for anyone, including Dublin. However I expect Dublin to have enough to deal with the various scenarios that may go against them over the 70 odd minutes.

What a year of amazing sporting results.

Leicester winning the league.
Portugal winning the euros.
Iceland and Wales and their runs in the euros.
Dundalk qualifying for the champions league
Tipperary getting to an all Ireland semi final
Longford beating Monaghan in Clones.
Galway beating Mayo in Castlebar..

Can Dublin add to that list by beating the mighty Donegal ? :D

Its getting closer.

I have strong opinions on Michael Murphy's form but if they play him midfield for any length of time they will be over run. Simply have to leave him at full forward and if he can't do it there then take him off

Great news. Roll on Saturday two great games in store and a great night out after (if we win of course). I take it with the late throw in a lot of Donegal with young families won't be travelling that's a shame and not right.

Yeah I can't get to this one and have had a good moan about the Sky coverage on another thread.
Fantastic day's football in store on Saturday. I just hope my Mobrdo app and Wifi stay strong!

McCarthy back is a huge lift for the Dubs. I can see him picking up Murphy now and he's done a good job on him in the past. Then again I don't think Michael is fit enough this year to be out around the middle. We should have brought Neil Gallagher to Lourdes this week! Such a pity the big man hasn't been fit this year at all. If he was going well it would free up Murphy to head inside and do some real damage to Dublin's FB line.

Donegal outplayed dublin 2014, it was superb stuff and full credit to them. Yet dublin scored 17 points and missed two reasonable goal chances. They were naive in their defending but also in this game dublin cleaned donegal on kickouts. It took some wonderful donegal defence/stopping to break up the dublin kick out. Anyway the past is the past.

Who do I fancy saturday? Dublin to win. Why?

-Ciaran Kilkenny is back didnt play in 2014, usually worth 2-3 points and a real big asset for dublin. He was colossal in games v mayo/kerry last year
-Dublin have a balance of defense and attack two years on which is very solid i.e cian o sullivan role.
-Donegal panel is not as strong as dublins, mannion, andrews huge boost for dubs.
- No Neil Gallagher who had a huge role in 2014 dismantling of dubs
- I suspect the winning of this game for dublin will be counteracting mc hughs & mc brearty, I think Jim Gavin will do this
- M Murphy hasnt played well for donegal in two seasons, apart from free kicks. If hes injured he shouldnt be playing. Donegal need him on song to have a chance, ATM he isnt.
- Dublin have been waiting on this game, they have had 3 weeks to get right for it, 7 days for donegal, it took 3 weeks and a specialized training camp in 2014 for Jim Mc Guiness to beat dublin.

All in all, I feel dublin have been waiting all season for august, they won leinster in 3rd gear, I really feel they will beat donegal by 3-6 points on saturday
Should be a cracker

Havent been overly impressed with Dublin to date. Id have predicted Donegal but for the 6 day turnaround think that will take its toll

BrianMac78 your entitled to your opinion but why have you not been impressed with Dublin this season? It's practically the exact same season as this time last year, what haven't they done not to impress you? We're unbeaten in league and championship and pretty much played the exact same way as last year, that doesn't mean we can't lose Saturday but right now it's impossible not to be impressed by Dublin this season.

I still don't think McCarthy will play on Saturday, Gavin chooses his words well, "he's fit for selection", doesn't necessarily mean he is or isn't playing
These are the games where some of the younger players need to get some game time anyway. Lowndes hasn't shown the promise he had as an u21 yet so maybe this is the right kind of game for him to get some big game experience. Small would be a fairly decent replacement for McCarthy anyway, he's big, strong and athletic, maybe he could do the man marking job on Murphy that a lot of people expected McCarthy to do.
