Cavan v Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well lads I thought it was a fairly entertaining game and I'm obviously disappointed that we conceded that goal at the end to allow for a replay. In saying that though I'm looking forward to the replay as I think Tyrone will have a chance to make some defensive adjustments and that will be crucial next day out. An extra game in Ulster championship is good for bringing teams on a bit. Harte will be more wary of the high ball threat the next day out and will plan accordingly. I'm not sure if it was a deliberate tactic by Hyland? But it certainly helped them today. Mc Givney being the inside target will have to be extremely well marshaled. On any given day 16 scores will beat 10 and 3 goals is a very fortunate return for any team to get against this Tyrone defense. I can't see that happening again. Cavan kept up the fight to the end and were rewarded for their effort and have some great players and are a decent team. I still fancy Tyrone to take the replay if they can keep Johnstone quiet like today and get a better handle on Mc Givney. I'd definitely be interested to hear what Del thinks in the goal decisions and square ball arguments just for the sake of it. I thought the ref was very good overall in fairness to him.

Have to disagree. Thought the ref was excellent today.....apart from a few 50/50 calls. No compliants from Tyrone or Cavan supporters at the game. The ref let the game flow in awful conditions and took the conditions into consideration by keeping the cards in the pocket for the most part.
Good game......Tyrone were lax in conceding 3 goals. Draw fair result.

You are letting your bias get in the way of your judgement. Cavan's goals were not square ball. Constantly quoting the rule like as if you had wrote it yourself won't change the reality of what happened today.

By the way I said that Cavan are competitive again. I made no further claims for them. They missed their chance today and will not win the replay. I'm aware of their limitations but I'm annoyed when I see someone try to take from their efforts this afternoon and then claim he did so because he's a football purist!! Name calling will not when the argument for you."
You know the rule just as well as I do?

Did you or did you not say the bit in bold?

You keep saying that gotmilk but the square ball rule you mention only applies to free kicks. Anyway I can't expect a "neutral" Fermanagh man to be fair. Thank God it wasn't an Ulster referee today as we would have seen more calls like you are trying to make against Cavan.

I'm saying that Givney was in the square when the ball was passed to him to score. It's that simple. According to the rules, so long as the ball went into the square (which to me it looks like it did before Givney touched it), it is a square ball. The square ball rule i mention has nothing to do with free kicks.

Accept it was a great game played in poor weather conditions and refereed by someone who let the game go and did a great job. We will watch the game on Saturday night with interest and hope it is as sporting as today's was."
I have yet to meet a Donegal supporter who thought that Neil McGee didn't deserve to get sent off and get a ban. In fact most Donegal supporters, myself uncluded, are deeply concerned by our lack of discipline. We were used to a very disciplined team under JMcG but not so anymore.

As for the ref today I actually thought he did a good job in very difficult circumstances. He let the game flow, the ref will always make a few mistakes when the conditions are so bad.

This thread, as well as the one from the Donegal match last week, really shows how many people think, incorrectly, that the square ball rule has been gotten rid of in open play.

It has not been gotten rid of, it has been amended though.

Totally agree with your comment I was referring to the stick the ref got after the McGee incident from McHugh et al and not Donegal fans whom the majority agreed with the ref. I also agree that Jim had his team playing tough football right on the edge but not breaking the rules - think Gallagher doesn't instil the same discipline in his players. And back to the game today all I was suggesting was that a few of your county comrades are making ridiculous comments - instead of talking about a free flowing game ref'ed very well they just see some very small negatives that no one else including the SG anti Ulster brigade saw - in fact they thought it was a great game. Even Spillane says he's a fan of Tyrone football (the thought of it!) and only said puke football once and it has been overeggararated since.

You're barking up the wrong tree with me, it's blue heaven with the ridiculous conspiracy theory.

He is a good Ref Del..he will always make a fair contest and is not heavy handed or penalizes the physicality of the game!

Sorry that's who I was referring to - and he has continued his comments claiming it's going on 40 years - must have a long memory and been stewing on this for a very long time.

This topic is starting to stray a bit.

As for the game today - I enjoyed it despite the rain. The absolute passion and commitment this group of Cavan players show is a joy to behold. I think the game was there for the taking, and had we made changes earlier (when leading in the 2nd half) we may have pushed on.

The conditions were horrendous - I've watched some of the game back online and it doesn't do it justice at all. Given how bad it was, some of the play on show was mighty impressive. Colm Cavanagh made one catch in the second half that was just unreal!

I'd have absolutely no fear of Tyrone in the replay. I fully expect them to up their game but this Cavan team have a lot more than they showed today too. If its a dry day, I'd expect a belter of a game. We go again.

So whose going to win the replay? Who has gained the most from today? Who will learn the most from today? It was a terrible day today weather wise for so many supporters. Even those on the covered stand got soaked.

Good match today and the ref has to be signaled out for praise here in fairness. He got all the big decisions right and was consistent throughout especially on bringing the ball into contact (why Cavan continued to do this with the ref being so consistent on it was baffling) . He did give Tyrone a free out today that should have been a Cavan free in, but he also gave cavan a very soft free in (Mc Keirnan's one) , but that was it could have no complaints with him.
Now. Seanie Jonstone has had two chances at Tyrone and done nothing. Keating has to start in the replay as does Argue. Cavan showed up Tyrone's weakness under the high ball today and if ever there was a Cavan player to exploit this it is Argue. Moving Killian Clarke up to full forward did not work, indeed it weakened their defence somewhat the two times they done it today.
Tyrone were the better team today and were unlucky not to win, you would expect them to be better the next day, but Cavan showed that if you go like for like with them they are very beatable. In a tight match where scores are hard come by a good long range free taker could make all the difference and Tyrone don't have one, even MH said as much in his interview after the match (on BBC of course)

Up to this game I thought Tyrone really were in with a chance of challenging for SAM but they won't come near it now. Cavan are a decent side, nothing more, but when they ran at Tyrone through the middle they opened them up like a tin of tuna. When they pumped long high balls in Tyrone also struggled badly and were all over the place so just think what Dublin and Kerry would do to them. Tyrone have always been prone to fast players running through their middle and half back line and Cavan really exposed that. So it looks like a shoot out once again between Dublin and Kerry with Dublin winning by 15 points.
