Weaker hurling counties in Leinster improving

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In my opinion, the only way a county will improve is if the grassroots improve. More juveniles playing, more clubs fielding and more/better teams in the local SHC. Take my county, Wicklow, we will always be top of 2B or bottom of 2A unless big changes are made. Meath look like they may make a breakthrough from what I hear on the ground. They have the numbers coming through and the interest locally.

Replying To keeper7:  "Kildare hurling has improved a lot. Their minors & U21s usually compete in the Leinster championship proper these days. Celbridge almost won the Leinster intermediate club title against Carickshock."
You're correct. They have improved a lot due to the efforts put in by a small dedicated bunch of people. But it doesn't negate my point. They have reached a ceiling and won't improve any more because the county board don't want them to improve any more.

Hurling is reliant on "small dedicated bunches of people" in an awful lot of counties and support (provided it doesn't interfere with football) from CB's can be token at best.

Dublin under 17s beat Offaly under 17s because they were fitter
Dublin minors beat Laois Minors because they were fitter both games dominated in parts by Offaly and Laois but neither could live with Dublin down the stretch , the skills are/were there.
Fantastic game some months back Dublin under 17s beat Meath minor team best two players on pitch wore green.
Kildare won that league final against Dubs 17 in second period of extra time.
The skills are there.
Just a note to the poster going on about funding yet again , Dublin Hurling coaching staff all volunteers / teachers all four of them , currently neither the 17s or the minors have as much as received a solitary in free gear , no bag , no training tops , no tracksuits etc
Back to the so called weaker counties there is both skill and a hunger there , just not sure its matched at county board or provisional board level
