Hurling League

GAA aren't really interested in promoting hurling they already have the other product i.e football. They have no vested interest in promoting hurling. Not like over here where Aussie rules is putting development resources into traditional rugby league / rugby union areas especially Queensland. Maybe the GAA should be split in two lol

That sounds great - but Antrim haven't received any money from that yet!!!!

In Armagh we get the hurling subsidy from Croke Park a year after it should be given, so we will get the 2015 award later this yr....

In reality, we need coaches, good coaches, competitions and games, not 'plans' and reports..... my home is full of reports and plans of what will and may be done!!!

I agree completely Crikey. Hurling is treated like the poor relation by the GAA. If I had my way there would be a separate sporting organisation for hurling.

It's better to be getting 37.5k than nothing. I know it won't change the world but if spent wisely it could go a long way.

Paidi Butler was doing great work as the national hurling director and off course that role was after the initial five years. He was training the coaches and that's exactly what was needed. Now it's sporadically done by someone like Cody when invited by a club.

As I already said I would be very supportive of additional coaching being done in Armagh or any county. Also waiting over a year for funding is a joke. Sorry to hear that Cuchullain.

GAA hasn't made any attempt to grow the game of Hurling since 1884. No push to promote the game. Can't think of many sports that haven't made any attempt to grow. Think of all the basketball or rugby clubs that started up in the meantime.

Crikey the can't even grow the game in Ireland :) That should be the easiest place to grow hurling. I hate all those labels bandied about like 'hurling snob', any hurling fans I know would like to see the game grow. With the exception of Clare, Limerick and Galway there seems to be apathy to hurling along the West coast and it's the eastern parts of those counties where hurling is strongest. West Clare, West Limerick and West Galway seem to be more football focused. The wild Atlantic way says no to hurling :)

Killarney,

37K would cover 1 coach plus his travelling expenses, given the amount of clubs the length and breadth of Antrim.

Each of the four named counties and indeed beyond them, would, at the very least, require Eu 1million each over 4/5 years.

Then at least we could maybe move beyond the lip service accusation levelled at Central Council.

Derry and Down shouldn't be forgotten either. Down won the Ring not too long ago. Derry were in the Ring final last year.

Returning to the field of play, after the high of last weekend, Kerry will be in for a tough afternoon with the visit of Limerick. The Munster League reflected where Kerry are. It's great that Kerry dusted themselves down from those defeats and accepted them for what they are. Those lessons need to be learned and Kerry were brave enough for the challenge. The Munster League result was 2-23 to 0-18. The handicap betting is Kerry +12 and that seems about right.

Usually in the league I find that the team with the most to lose usually wins unless there is a massive gulf in class. With that in mind.

Kerry "going out to win". It's a nice dream but the reality will be somewhat different.

Limerick, Wexford and Clare are the challenges Kerry got promoted for. Offaly are in the qualifier group so are at Kerry's level. Laois were in the qualifier group last year.

The game away to Offaly will be the big one in terms of any ambitions of staying in 1B. In the bizarre hurling league format, if Kerry avoid the bottom 2 places against the odds they will mostly take on the top team from 1A in a quarter-final! Anyways that's a long way off yet.

Legend,

Should the game be in Tralee instead of Killarney? Will the hurlers get the support they deserve for this?

In response to Coach McGrath's call (Waterford) for a less pressured NHL -
I think they should have 2 groups of 6 playing teams from the OTHER group.
This way, teams play same match number (3 home and 3 away) and there are no odd team byes.
I would put the weakest 2 teams (Pot C) with the 4 strongest seeded (Pot A) in the same Group AC to avoid each other, and play teams ranked 5 to 10 in Group B.
Both group winners and 2 wild cards to KO SFs.
Prior year SFlists to next year Pot A; Prior year Div 2 champ and 5th in AC to next year Pot C; 6th in AC relegated; and remaining 6 teams to Pot/Group B.
Option - Expand to 2x8 - 8 in AC versus 5th to 12th ranked in B.

@ keeper7

Austin Stack Park has been undergoing redevelopment work on the pitch. An improved pitch has been laid and other work upgrading facilities has been taking place. It's to reopen on March 6th when the hurlers take on Wexford and the footballers take on Donegal.

RES Kerry 1-15 Limerick 1-19, Fitzgerald Stadium

It was a closer gap at the end than many might have expected. There will be days when there will be heavier losses e.g. Clare's win of 2-27 to 0-08 in the Munster hurling league.

Sounded like it was over by half-time & Limerick took the foot off the gas in the second half??? Still though, Kerry are learning valuable lessons.
