The Wexford hurlers actually did beat the Wexford Footballers at football in a charity game. First half football second hurling. The hurlers were 5 points up at half time. Then the hurling started and things got pretty embarrassing for the Footballers.

At the 2010 All-Ireland hurling final, I happened to be sitting beside 2 of my fellow county men (whom I'd never met before) whose first hurling match they were in attendance. Even though they were clearly gobsmacked by the game they won't be starting hurling in their club anytime soon.

I would honestly never go out of my way to see a football match. Not that I don't like football or anything but at times it is just painful to watch.
A lot is said about hurling snobs etc. but the game backs itself up time after time with incredible matches. Football continues to falter. Look at last years AI final....the game was an embarrassment.

Ollie
Cu-chulainn got off a lucky shot that day, the replay showed the hound had left his line for that penalty , which is why hurlers now have to wear helmets these days and also why the Anthony Nash rule was introduced :-)

Well if one thing is for sure, the two games are out of this world on every aspect, speed, fitness, physicality, intensity when in comparison to soccer

The OP is not on his own.
I have never been to a hurling championship match or club game either and i'm playing and coaching gaelic football for over 40 years..
I am purely a football man and have little interest in hurling.

Kingdom boy you need a bit of luck now and again. Paddy Keenan is related to Cu Chulainn. Two great warriors.

I saw the 2006 Nicky Rackard Cup final but that is just because it was on before the football quarter finals, I have little interest in the sport as you can't even see the ball.

Only hurling game I was at was the first half of Kilkenny v Waterford back in 2009, Meath had played Mayo in the early game, now I like hurling, a good game of hurling is brilliant to watch but the fans can be awful insecure. A lot of them feel the need to remind us (but more importantly themselves) ad nauseam about how great the sport is and how nothing compares to it, so it may be the fastest field game in the world but it's also the most self congratulatory sport in the world aswell :-)

A friend of a friend from a football county was dragged along to Croke Park once to see his first ever hurling match.

"What do you think of it", his companions asked.

"Is it Hurling you call it; where I come from, they call it Camogie, only girls will play it." was his reply.

Being from a football county I watch much more football than hurling. I have been to a good few hurling matches, including this years All Ireland final replay. At the top level hurling is a great game. I honestly believe though that if the football championship was played between the top 12 counties every year the standard of matches would be great too. They are two great games but a poor football match is much better than a poor hurling match. I would also guess those from hurling counties have seen very few really poor hurling matches!

Is that Because you have to be mental to play it?

Somebody else mentioned the fact that hurling people constantly promote hurling. Of course they do!! I'm extremely proud of my county's hurling tradition. Football is a good game but there's so many more like it. Hurling to me is well and truly Irish.there's no sport like it. It's compared to hockey or lacrosse but in reality it's worlds apart. It requires the absolute peak of Human capabilities. Incredible speed, strength, balance, guts, skill and intelligence. There's a reason only about 10 counties are any good at it. Anybody on thus earth can kick a large ball. The Small ball game is exceptionally difficult to master. Not to mention in a great Game one dude can be ten points up and then be behind within 3-4 minutes. A result is never safe until the whistle. Very few sports I'm the world are like that.

I played both. Have to say I was better at hurling. But in meath that means nothing. My first love was is and always will be football. Same goes for watching them always prefer the big ball.

Mindnumbingly boring applies to football too, especially this time of year, but your comments probably reveal more about you than any insight into the actual game of hurling.

Below the top level, where most sports are pretty enjoyable, id only ever watch a hurling match (at any level at all), football if my club or someone i know was playing any other sport, id turn around and watch the grass growing on the next pitch!. Id presume most people are similar enough, they have their favourite sports that they understand and appreciate better
